Wine Information

1961 was to become the decade’s and one of the century’s most adored vintages of Bordeaux red wines

Despite a frost in March, the growing season started on time and well. The frost combined with weak pollination caused by poor weather reduced the crop volume significantly.  July’s rains gave way to drier weather in August, and September bathed Bordeaux in beautiful sunshine. Vintage 1961

1961 - the greatest Bordeaux vintage of all time?

I am writing this during the primeur campaign and I notice that Bordeaux château owners and merchants have been exceptionally quiet this year. Written Notes

In good condition with top-shoulder level. Decanted 45 minutes. It exhibited a dark, opaque garnet colour. This beauty continues to reveal the fragrance and elegance that one expects from wines of 1961 vintage, but so rarely finds from others. A fragrant, complex bouquet of cedar, herbs, vanillin, tobacco, and coffee is followed by a soft, gentle, well balanced and complex wine with sweet layers of fruit. Very supple with a finely-tuned concentration of fruit and firm but silky tannin, and a long, rich finish. I am not sure how much longer the Angelus will still keep, but from a regular bottle, it is charming and should be drank now.
