The Story

Léoville Poyferré has 80 hectares of vineyards planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (25%), Petit Verdot (8%) and Cabernet Franc (2%).

Léoville Poyferré traditionally produced the softest and most supple wine of the 3 Léovilles, yet in the last decade the wines have definitely put on weight and body. This is largely due to the grapes being harvested riper and later and because of the increased exposure to new oak in the maturation p...

Written Notes

1900 was an amazingly good vintage of very ripe, broad and age-worthy wines. This Léoville-Poyferré had top-shoulder level and cork and capsule were still in fair condition. Very deep, striking bright colour, even more brilliant than the 1900 Lafite. Amazing ripe, rich sweet fruit, caramel and black cherry aromas on the nose. Sound and open. On the palate it was nicely balanced, very concentrated and surprisingly fresh. Has complexity and beautiful smoothness with sweet tannins. It is unbelievably seamless, classic and elegant wine. Held in the glass approximately 30 minutes without drying up. Another ingenious wine that has confidently survived the test of time.

Good looking normal size bottle and has mid-shoulder level. Colour is brownish and mature. On the nose it is intense, opulent, generous and round. The taste is elegant, toasty, harmonious, with low tannin, with silky tannins, medium-bodied, with balanced and good texture structure. On the palate it is layered and has leather, honey, vanilla, blackberry, meaty, cigar-box and coffee flavours. The finish is medium long, round and flavorful. This wine is well-rounded and fine. I paid around 1k-3k€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 1-5 years and decant at least 45min before tasting. Too expensive for quality. I do recommend.
