The Story

Léoville Poyferré has 80 hectares of vineyards planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (25%), Petit Verdot (8%) and Cabernet Franc (2%).

Léoville Poyferré traditionally produced the softest and most supple wine of the 3 Léovilles, yet in the last decade the wines have definitely put on weight and body. This is largely due to the grapes being harvested riper and later and because of the increased exposure to new oak in the maturation p...

Vintage 2012

The 2012 Bordeaux vintage report.

The 2012 Bordeaux vintage is a year for vineyard management and workers. Call it a winemakers vintage, or change your tune and call it vineyard managers vintage. Either descriptor works perfectly. Wineries with the financial capacity to take the necessary measures in the vineyards during the season, coupled with the willingness to severely downgrade unripe grapes, will produce the best wines. Even then, it ...

Written Notes

Third time that I taste blind this 2012 with two different provenance and this bottle is close to the 1st one without any comparison of the really disapointed second expérience I had with Poyferré 2012. Dark, deep, ripe and powerful... a wonderful wine on this challenging vintage.

Tasted in September 2019. Great complexity, length, fine balance and plenty of aromatic black fruit. Splendid effort and heartbreaker wine.
