The Story

Château Pichon Longueville de Lalande is ideally situated between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. The variety of parcels of land, due to the elements of the earth and their encepagement explains the complexity of the personality of the wines of Pichon. Since the end of the 1970's, the reputation of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has acquired the status of a "super second" and a "nearly first", in light of the consis...

Vintage 2017

Bordeaux 2017 - A year of contrast

Life is not fair and neither is nature. As the earth warms, flowering becomes earlier and the risk of frost damage increases. Few winemakers remember the frosts of 1991, but their legacy is still haunting. When meteorologists predicted a cold blast on the nights of April 27 and 28, there was a real sense of panic. Most with the means deployed, candles, wind turbines, helicopters, lit hay, took all the meas...

Written Notes

Tasted in November 2021. 70% C. Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 6% C. Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. A classy nose of tobacco leaf, creamy, exquisite and sophisticated with stunning complexity and elegance. Very precise and focused. An utterly expressive and impressive wine to enjoy before 2018-2019-2020 will be ready to drink!

Salted meats again here. Power, poise, intensity, length. Powdery tannins. Lovely. IT perhaps?

Ruby. Blueberries, anise, spices, floral, cassis, blackberries, nuanced, detailed, layered, intense yet delicate in a way. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, cassis, bright, detailed, blueberries, cassis, almost filigree with more power. Long. 95-97

This barrel sample is 100% new oak, whereas the final blend will be only 60% new oak. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is very deep garnet-purple in color with an incredibly fragrant nose of roses, lavender and baking spices over a core of crushed blackcurrants, wild blueberries and fresh plums plus touches of iron ore and underbrush. Medium-bodied and elegant with firm, grainy tannins, it's quite taut and muscular, with lots of perfumed and mineral layers and a long finish with lingering cinnamon and anise notes. 94-96p

Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black core. Very elegant nose, blackcurrants, discreet hints of red berries in the background. Roasting aroma in the background, hints of vanilla and mild spices. On the palate wonderful elegance, fine Cabernet-fruit, discreet dark berries in the finish. Very elegant spiciness, a wine with finesse and elegance displaying a lot of freshness and ageing potential. 96
