A cold winter was followed by significant spring frosts. The early summer was warm, but cool weather and rain persisted throughout the flowering period. Summer ended with warm temperatures, lending some hot-year characteristics to the year's wines even if acidity remained high at 8.5 g/l. Rot played a role in some vineyards. This is one of the least evolved '97s I have ever encountered. An unruly acidity makes me suspect that parts of the wine have not gone through malolactic fermentation. The winemaker Odilon has, at all costs, tried to avoid the vintage's flaccid, good-natured, and unstructured character. The nose consists of creamy, almost clinically mellow elements of newly washed sheets, which become more apparent the longer the wine is aired. Otherwise, this young greenish-yellow wine is dominated by fruity aromas. Most obvious are cherimoya, papaya, banana, and grapefruit. Incredibly acidic finish, just like a great '96.
