Vintage 1996

Up to this point 1996 has been considered a fantastic vintage which produced classic wines; the best since 1990. A long, dry summer produced grapes of record ripeness with record acidity. Some, including myself, question how the 1996s are aging. The wines are generally characterized by a distinctive rather lemony acidity and very good attack, but some wines now seem terribly austere, while others already seem dangerously short of fruit. Written Notes

Many of us have waited for a new vintage of this favorite wine. When it finally arrived, the Champagne fulfilled all our expectations. The color is very light, with salmon-pink and yellowish hints. The nose is tight and impressive, with layers of toffee, leather, honey, lilies, white chocolate, and exotic fruit. The taste is excellent: naturally sweet, creamy, and possessing a caressing structure. The length is impressive—and underneath all this we know that the acidity is present, keeping the wine alive for a long time to come.

Fragile and clear shade of onion peel. Mild and elegant, spicy, minerally clean and fruity ethereal nose. A fresh acid structure supports the classically elegant entity. A superb wine, already harmonious now, but which will develop in the bottle for a long time.
