The Story

This wine takes its name from the walls that protected the monastery at Poblet during the Mercenary Wars. The unmistakeable identity of Grans Muralles is thanks to the stony, slate ground (Licorella) of the region, and the grape varieties believed to be extinct, such as Garró an Querol, using modern viticultural techniques. Together with Cariñena and Monastrell they create the unique spirit of this wine..

Vintage 2016

SPAIN 2016 will be remembered for the piles of grapes thrown to the ground in Rioja. Our most renowned wine region, as well as Navarra and most appellations in Castilla y León, registered very high yields in sharp contrast with Mediterranean wine regions where drought led to below-average production levels. The gloomy picture came from Ribeira Sacra in Galicia where severe hail hit the area of Doade in August and destroyed 400,000 kilos of gra...

Written Notes

Good looking normal size bottle and in an perfect condition. Colour is and looking clear and deep. On the nose it is seductive and complex. The taste is perfumed, fruity, full of energy, and dry, high alcohol content, with high tannin, with sweet tannins, and average in acidity, full-bodied, with balanced structure and developing. On the palate it is layered and has toasty, truffles, chocolate, mineral, meaty and blueberry flavours. The finish is long and flavorful. This wine is excellent. I paid around 100-200€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years and decant at least 45min before tasting. Good value for money. I do recommend.

Deep, dark ruby red colour. Opulent and harmoniously intense nose with toastiness, spices, mocha, dark chocolate and jammy ripe black fruits. Full-bodied palate with supple ripe tannins, smooth ripe fruitiness and lovely toasty spiciness. Long finish with perfumey tones and warming chili-chocolate flavours. Drink now-2030. Decant for 3 hours and serve at 17-18°C with grilled lamb chops and rosemary potatos or roasted duck with crispy sweet potatoes and fondant. JL 94p (12/2020)

  • 94p

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Opulent nose with distinct fruit, ripe plums, blackberries, mulberries, gingerbread spices, ripe cherries and hints of violets in the background. On the palate rich approach, well structured with intense ripe tannins, mild acidity, great aromatic depth and length. An impressing wine with velvety character.
