The Story

La Mission Haut Brion is situated in Bordeaux' southern suburb, Talence. From 1919 and until 1983, it was Woltner family, who had owned this property. Under Woltner's reign, La Mission Haut Brion experienced one of its greatest period with string of fine vintages and was considered then as fully on the level with First Growths and sometimes even better than these. In 1983, owners of Haut Brion purchased La Mission Haut Brion and today its Jean...

Château La Mission Haut-Brion

In the 17th century, Madame de Lestonnac bequeathed the domain of La Mission Haut-Brion to the Pères Lazaristes, a congregation founded by Saint-Vincent de Paul. Vintage 1953

The 1953 became the first top vintage of the 1950s. The year turned out to be excellent, even if the heavy rains in September threatened to destroy a good year. Written Notes

A typical ’53 with the telltale sweetness and balance of the vintage. A lovely, charming wine! It is drinking beautifully now and there is nothing to be gained by waiting.

Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1953 suffered the same fate. The nose was wonderful, all fruit, mintiness (menthol), perfume, elegance. The palate powerful, in perfect balance. And then, when one is full of joy and admiration for such a great wine, the finish ends just a bit too short. Again, I remember this wine from a previous tasting, where it was just a bit better. Damn.
