“A candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2009 La Mission-Haut-Brion stood out as one of the most exceptional young wines I had ever tasted from barrel, and its greatness has been confirmed in the bottle. A remarkable effort from the Dillon family, this is another large-scaled La Mission that tips the scales at 15% alcohol. A blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (47% of each) and the rest Cabernet Franc, it exhibits an opaque...

The Story

La Mission Haut Brion is situated in Bordeaux' southern suburb, Talence. From 1919 and until 1983, it was Woltner family, who had owned this property. Under Woltner's reign, La Mission Haut Brion experienced one of its greatest period with string of fine vintages and was considered then as fully on the level with First Growths and sometimes even better than these. In 1983, owners of Haut Brion purchased La Mission Haut Brion and today its Jean...

Wine Information

Château La Mission Haut-Brion’s tasting notes : A bewitching wine, from beginning to end of the tasting experience! The colour is very deep and the nose is intense, with plenty of character.
This rich and utterly delicious wine spreads out beautifully on the palate. The tannin is smooth and sweet.
2009 La Mission Haut Brion inevitably reminds tasters of one of this estate's finest successes: the 2000 vintage.
The concentration, class, and b...

Vintage 2009

Much like 1947, 1961 and 2005, 2009 is a year of almost overly (for Bordeaux) flamboyant and opulent wines with high maturity and low acidity. The tannins are exceptionally ripe, while the wines are quite voluptuous in style. The Left Bank recorded more hours of sunshine than legendary vintages such as 1947 and 1982, and the grapes had higher sugar concentrations than in 2003 and 2005. The key was significant diurnal temperature variations tha...

Written Notes

Compared with Haut-Brion, La Mission is more open with spicy, cedar, tobacco flavours. A generous, layered wine with supple texture and beautifully ripe tannins.

Tasted on the 27th January 2017 in Copenhagen, a bottle from Duclot (negociant who owns Petrus) Bordeaux Collection case of 9 bottles in vintage 2009. Double decanted at 3pm, we tasted it app. 5 hours later. Very expressive, ripeness á point, very powerful with great acidity, sophisticated and with immense length. A little more depth would have resulted in perfect score here, but it can come with more age, I hope.
