The Story

La Mission Haut Brion is situated in Bordeaux' southern suburb, Talence. From 1919 and until 1983, it was Woltner family, who had owned this property. Under Woltner's reign, La Mission Haut Brion experienced one of its greatest period with string of fine vintages and was considered then as fully on the level with First Growths and sometimes even better than these. In 1983, owners of Haut Brion purchased La Mission Haut Brion and today its Jean...

Wine Information

2005 Château La Mission Haut-Brion’s tasting notes :The colour of La Mission Haut-Brion is very dark. One can surmise by its depth that the wine is extremely dense. The nose has great precision.
We find there the aromas of red fruit, earth, smoke, and liquorish. With the evidence of this complexity in the mouth one notes the first impression which is the surprising contrast between the concentration of the wine and its smoothness.

Vintage 2005

Bordeaux Vintage Report 2005 is a truly fantastic vintage with great quality across the board on both the Left and Right Banks.

The 2005 vintage became the most anticipated since 2000. The early market was heated and prices skyrocketed. The cold winter delayed bud break before the warm, dunny spring broke through. Even the vegetative growth and flowering gave a perfect start to the vintage. The summer turned out to be one of the driest ever...

Written Notes

A powerful expression of rich, detailed, polished Cabernet, with layer upon layer of blackberry, licorice, kirsch, graphite and savory herb flavors. Impeccably balanced and nuanced, authoritative and refined in the same sip.

Quite deep to the rim, the nose has a touch of sweetness but it is reticent, smoky, calm, medicinal, leathery, tapenade, closed in, mean even. This big stature, four-square with Asian spice coming through, lovely density but just sits majestically. This is very elegant, with a creamy texture. This is svelte and comes back again and again with new layers. Iron filings, ash, this is closed compared to the Tertre Roteboeuf tasted alongside, very intellectual with great potential.

Tasted three times - last time in September 2015. Consistent notes. La Mission shined as usual with its silky structure, breathtaking composition, enormous richness, finesse and perfect balance between fruit and tannin, both perfectly ripe. Sensational wine! A legend in winemaking and one to keep for several decades. In September 2015, this wine had chosen to show its tannic "face", but did also show exquisite complexity, depth and sophisticated touch. In deep sleep.

Inside Information

“There are slightly more than 5,000 cases of the 2005 La Mission-Haut-Brion, a blend of 69% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and a touch of Cabernet Franc. While there is little difference between La Mission and Haut-Brion’s terroirs (their vineyards are only separated by a two-lane road), La Mission possesses more fat, texture, and intensity. An enormously endowed wine with huge tannin and structure, the 2005 offers a quintessential Graves bouquet of burning embers, charcoal, blackberries, truffles, black currants, and a meaty character. Reminiscent of the 1989, with more structure as well as a longer window of drinkability, the 2005 may be a modern day, improved version of a vintage such as 1955, which was well-endowed, very tannic, and took a long time to come around. While fabulously full-bodied and unctuous, the 2005 will not provide much charm in its youth. It needs 8-10 years of cellaring, and should age effortlessly for 30-40 years.” -Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (97 Points)
