The Story

Angelo Gaja forever changed the world's notion of Piedmont wines when he released this historic wine for the first time in 1985 (with the 1982 vintage), made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes planted in the township of Barbaresco. Written Notes

The child of a ripe vintage, the ’12 Darmagi explodes from the glass in a profusion of brambly, juicy red and blue fruit that’s layered atop sun-warmed earth, cigar wrapper, baking spices and mocha. Opulent yet supple, this wine balances its chewy tannins with fresh acidity as it builds to a long, caressing finish. An elegant blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, this wine belies its name Darmagi, which means "what a pity" in the Piemontese dialect. After fermenting in temperature-controlled stainless steel for about two weeks, this wine ages for 6-8 months in barrique, followed by a year in oak casks. Concentrated on the nose and palate, with expansive and complex layers, this beautiful wine marries the distinct terroir of Piemonte with the engaging personalities of its international contributors.
