The 1971 Dom Perignon was the first bottle with a noticeable gold color, and was the only non-Oenotheque bottling between 1983 and 1964. It has an herbal edge in the beginning that integrated into its complex bread aromas. There was some lime there as well, with some delicious vanilla ice cream soda flavors. The 1971 was great very smooth with mature malted flavors (95).

All the older vintages of Dom Pérignon develop a clear tone of roasted coffee beans. The '71 is full of such aromas. The taste is slightly thinner than the '73 and without its walnut tones, but the aftertaste is actually longer. Better and more impressive almost every time I taste it.

The 1971 Dom Pérignon (Original Release) is a powerful, structured Champagne. Rosewater, dried flower and spice nuances give the 1971 a distinctive exotic profile. The 1971 does not have the fruit depth or mid-palate richness of most of the other wines in this tasting. As a result, the 1971 starts to feel a bit dry and austere as the fruit begins to fade. Even so, the 1971 is a highly attractive Champagne.

A level fill as far as I remember, golden with a light amber hue, remarkable small bubbles. Slight oxidative note, yeast, nuts and caramel, even almonds. Ok acidity and mousse, balanced, slightly lean, leafy and earthy and a bit short. Burnt caramel finish. I prefer fresher style and bottles of champagne! 88 (The 76 some weeks back was a very different animal)

Bottle with normal size. Looking medium, gold and bright. Open, intense, wide, complex, refined, ripe, seductive and generous on the nose. The taste is focused, fragrant, toasty, refined, harmonious, average in acidity, perfectly balanced, well-structured, good texture, concentrated, multi-dimensional, complex, developing, medium-bodied and dry. With apricot, nutty, toasty and mineral flavor. Long, lingering, vibrant and flavorful. Impressive, outstanding and sophisticated. Not decanted and recommend drinking now.
