Burgundy

The 1931 wine vintage in Burgundy was a highly difficult, poor, and largely unsuccessful year, suffering from the exact same dismal, cold, and rainy weather pattern that decimated harvests across the rest of France. A relentlessly wet spring delayed the vines' flowering, which was followed by a gloomy, sun-starved summer that severely hindered grape maturation. Relentless rainfall during the late September harvest resulted in highly diluted juices prone to rot. The red Pinot Noirs turned out pale, thin, and aggressively high in herbal acidity, while the white Chardonnays were largely lean, austere, and lacking expressiveness. While historical logs from Prestige Cellar note the vintage as one of the weakest of the 20th century, the absolute top-tier bottlings were occasionally noted for holding surprisingly powerful aromas despite their light structural frame. Today, virtually all bottles have faded past existence, leaving 1931 solely as a rare archive curiosity for specialized historical wine collectors

Italia

The 1931 wine vintage in Italy was a spectacular, extraordinary triumph, providing yet another sun-drenched sanctuary away from the rain-soaked harvest disasters of France. In Piedmont, perfect late-season conditions allowed the late-ripening Nebbiolo grape to reach flawless levels of sugar and structural concentration. This enabled legendary estates like Marchesi di Barolo and Giacomo Borgogno to craft magnificent, deep, and velvety Barolo Riservas that possessed an immense lifespan. Down in Tuscany, the season was equally generous; historic estates like Barone Ricasoli utilized the excellent climate to produce robust, rich, and perfectly balanced Castello di Brolio Chiantis built with fine-grained tannins and sharp natural acidity. Because these Italian blockbusters were engineered with tremendous structural power, well-kept bottles have shown staggering resilience, surviving nearly a century in the cellar to become mythical, highly prized collector treasures today

Portugal

The 1931 wine vintage in Bordeaux was a disastrous, poor, and highly difficult year, historically remembered as one of the weakest and most weather-plagued harvests of the 20th century. A miserably long, wet spring gave way to a relentlessly cool and gloomy summer, plagued by a staggering 21 days of rainfall in August alone that starved the vines of crucial sun exposure. This cold, waterlogged climate delayed the harvest until late September and prevented the grapes from achieving proper sugar or phenolic maturity, resulting in thin, diluted juices heavily prone to rot. The resulting red wines were universally panned for being aggressively acidic, lean, and harshly vegetal. Compounded by the financial misery of the Great Depression, which deterred estates from making premium selections, virtually all bottles from the 1931 harvest have long since faded past their prime, leaving only a rare few first-growth collectors' items like Château Haut-Brion or Sauternes icons like Château d'Yquem intact as historical archive pieces rather than viable options for drinking

Spain

The 1931 wine vintage in Spain was a highly successful, good to excellent year, acting as a wonderful, sun-drenched sanctuary away from the rain-soaked harvest disasters that ruined France. While Bordeaux and Burgundy suffered under cold, gloomy skies, the Iberian Peninsula enjoyed a dry, warm summer that allowed grapes across northern Spain to achieve excellent sugar concentration and phenolic ripeness. In La Rioja, this favorable climate enabled traditional houses to harvest a healthy, well-balanced crop of Tempranillo. Top-tier estates like Marqués de Riscal and La Rioja Alta crafted remarkably elegant, medium-bodied Gran Reservas that possessed the vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannins required to cellar for decades. Despite the intense domestic political turmoil of 1931—which saw the founding of the Second Spanish Republic—the year's finest wines evolved into beautiful, silky, and highly resilient historical treasures

Vintage Report

Port Vintage Report: An exceptional novelty, one of the best of the century, with wines rich in fruity aromas and tannins, with a great capacity for aging. However, few houses declared production, owing to the international crisis which sparked a reduction in the demand for expensive wines; many stocks of excellent 1927 vintage were yet to be sold. The Vintage prize awarded to Noval with the designation of National must be highlighted, considered by the American magazine Wine Spectator in 1999 to be one of the 12 best wines in the world from the 20th Century. Winter was very dry and summer was exceptionally cold and dry, including August. In September, the temperature rose and some rain fell. A late harvest, at the end of September, under ideal weather conditions. Despite the irregularity of the weather, some notable wines were produced.
