Bordeaux

Bordeaux Vintage Report 2005 is a truly fantastic vintage with great quality across the board on both the Left and Right Banks.

The 2005 vintage became the most anticipated since 2000. The early market was heated and prices skyrocketed. The cold winter delayed bud break before the warm, dunny spring broke through. Even the vegetative growth and flowering gave a perfect start to the vintage. The summer turned out to be one of the driest ever, avoiding disaster, as the weather remained reasonably warm and not excessively hot like in 2003. The soil once again becomes a decisive quality factor. Gravelly areas, such as Graves, were hardest hit once again. In other words, you should expect quality wines.

For a short-term perspective, in the next two years, an excellent quantity of mature Bordeaux red wines will be available on the market. The 2004, 2002, 1999, 1994, 1992 and 1988 vintages offer a wide selection of wines that are pleasant to consume immediately or at most to store for a short period.

As investments, the best vintages of the last 35 years are 2018, 2016, 2010, 2009 ,2003, 1996, 1989, and 1982. The safest long-term investments are Latour, La Mission Haut-Brion, Haut-Brion, Le Pin Lafite and Pétrus.

Over the past 35 years, Bordeaux has experienced a substantial change in winemaking. Modern equipment and developing know-how have guaranteed more uniform quality. It appears that the next challenge will be dealing with extreme climates, including slow global warming, which has already given hints of its effects also in Bordeaux. It is impossible to say how Bordeaux wines will evolve over the next 35 years. We can only hope that their most characteristic trait, the elegant aristocratic nature underlined by a unique terroir, will never disappear.

 

 

Bordeaux Vintage Report 2005 est un millésime vraiment fantastique avec une grande qualité à tous les niveaux sur la rive gauche et la rive droite.

Le millésime 2005 est devenu le plus attendu depuis 2000. Le marché des primeurs a été chauffé et les prix ont grimpé en flèche. L’hiver froid a retardé le débourrement avant que le printemps chaud et dunny ne se brise. Même la croissance végétative et la floraison ont donné un début parfait au millésime. L’été s’est avéré être l’un des plus secs de tous les temps, évitant la catastrophe, car le temps est resté raisonnablement chaud et non excessivement chaud comme en 2003. Le sol redevient un facteur de qualité décisif. Les zones graveleuses, telles que Graves, ont été les plus touchées une fois de plus. En d’autres termes, il faut s’attendre à des vins de qualité.

Pour une perspective à court terme, dans les deux prochaines années, une excellente quantité de vins rouges de Bordeaux mûrs sera disponible sur le marché. Les millésimes 2004, 2002, 1999, 1994, 1992 et 1988 offrent une large sélection de vins agréables à consommer immédiatement ou tout au plus à stocker pendant une courte période.

En tant qu’investissements, les meilleurs millésimes des 35 dernières années sont 2003, 1996, 1989, 1986 et 1982. Les investissements à long terme les plus sûrs sont Latour, La Mission Haut-Brion, Haut-Brion, Le Pin et Pétrus.

Au cours des 35 dernières années, Bordeaux a connu un changement substantiel dans la vinification. Des équipements modernes et un savoir-faire en développement ont garanti une qualité plus uniforme. Il semble que le prochain défi sera de gérer les climats extrêmes, y compris le réchauffement climatique lent, qui a déjà donné des indices de ses effets également à Bordeaux. Il est impossible de dire comment les vins de Bordeaux vont évoluer dans les 35 prochaines années. Nous ne pouvons qu’espérer que leur trait le plus caractéristique, l’élégante nature aristocratique soulignée par un terroir unique, ne disparaîtra jamais.

Burgundy

2005 VINTAGE in Burgundy / Hopes made way for certainty.

2005 promises to produce outstanding whites, with elegance and opulence beyond the norm, and superb, seductive and well-structured red wines.

The richness of these wines perfectly expresses the diversity of the region. A wine of excellent quality is achieved above all through the ripeness and healthiness of the grapes. For this reason, thanks to the almost ideal climatic conditions, 2005 will an exceptional year. At the point of harvest, the chardonnay and pinot noir grapes (the two principal grape varieties in Burgundy) were magnificent and luscious. The chardonnay produced resplendent golden grapes, bursting with sugar and the pinot noir produced densely packed grapes of an intense colour, characteristic of all great vintages. Due to low rainfall and weak northerly winds, the grapes remained in a remarkable state and did not require any sorting.

Under a radiant sun, the harvest passed by peacefully, giving the wine-growers the opportunity to assess the optimal maturity in relation to the grape varieties and parcels. The sugar content in the grapes reached above satisfactory levels, in some cases close to outstanding, which is a good indication of maturity, and promises a good balance between the acidity and sugar levels found in the wines 

The red grapes' thick skin stored up large quantities of polyphenol (colour and tannin), a demonstration of their healthiness. Vinification took place in ideal circumstances. 

Mid-november 

The white wines, although still fermenting, already reveal an extraordinary richness and aromatic complexity with great finesse (notes of pear and peach with a hint of ripe grapefruits). On the palate, the wines are incredibly ample. The chewiness and acidity are in perfect harmony and enhance the elegance and freshness of the chardonnay.

The red wines possess deep and intense garnet-coloured robes. They exude intense aromas of fruit (blueberry, blackcurrants, cherries, wild strawberries) and variety of spices (pepper). On the palate, the fruit blends with the rounded elegance of the tannins and the light acidity, which all come together to ensure the length of the wine. The powerful and elegant structure of these wines is a sign of their good ageing potential. For the domaines, cooperatives and maisons of Burgundy, 2005 is without a doubt a vintage of exceptional quality which promises wonderful surprises for the consumer.

Champagne

 The 2005 vintage was a year of marked contrasts between seasons and regions. Following a fairly harsh winter, 2005 had a mild spring with relatively warm temperatures all year long. There was above average sunshine and a slight water deficit, as had been the case throughout the dry cycle of 2005/2004 and 2003. The heat and humidity in July produced larger grapes and bunches, rather unusually for the Champagne region, while the cooler weather in August, followed by a very sunny month of September, led to favourable ripening in spite of heavy parasite pressure. The harvest dates were “typical” of those of the decade: September 12th for Chardonnays and the following day for Pinots Noirs.

Napa Valley 2005 Vintage Report / Winter rains took pause for a dry, mild March then began again with record-setting precipitation late into the growing season delaying bloom and set. The summer months were cool and pleasant with few heat spikes. Fog and cool temperatures were a concern heading into September as sugar levels were yet to rise in all varieties. Warm, nearly perfect conditions arrived with an Indian Summer making for a later than average harvest, providing winemakers with fruit with extended hang and ultimately realizing excellent sugar development and balanced acids with a larger than average crop of what could be a signature vintages from Napa Valley.

Italy Vintage Report by Tb: 2005 was a very difficult year for producers. A dry and chilly summer turned into a rainy August. Piedmont was battered by hailstorms and a disease affecting the Baco 22, which dries out and eventually kills the vine. Tuscany was also hit by chilly, rainy weather and the challenges these pose for vineyards. It can be said that 2005 was entirely a winemaker's year, even if it was somewhat desperate.

Vintage Report

The 2005 vintage in Alsace

experienced a relatively dry winter, ideal for planting vines, until the end of March. Heavy rains, much hoped for, brought all the water the vines would need in spring. Rain and colder temperatures delayed budburst until mid/late April. May and June were hot and dry, with some occasional spotty rainfall, which caused some vineyards to flower later. The majority of vineyards between Gueberschwihr and Hunawihr were flowering in early June, but Thann did not finish until around June 20. The quantity of bunches and grapes was normal (our training system without cover reduced the size of the bunches and the number of berries). We then expected a medium-sized harvest.

July and August brought a series of 4 significant rainfalls (10 to 20mm) which were again ideal for the vines. At the end of August, the grass was still green in the vines and there were no signs of stress. It was possible to enjoy a year without illness if all proper care was given.

The start of August was cool, with temperatures often well below 15 degrees C. This type of climate (similar to 2004 and 2002) delayed the color change of the grapes at the end of August and , more importantly, is most certainly responsible for the high acidity level of the 2005 wines.

From the 4th week of August to the end of the harvest, the weather was hot to very hot (a few record days in September). October 2005 was the second warmest after 2001 in the last 10 years. Needless to say, such conditions favored good ripening, high acidity (high tartaric, low malic, low pH), excellent health and small, thick-skinned berries. Only a few overgrown Riesling grapes suffered from water stress and struggled to ripen properly. The weather was exceptional during the harvest, with the exception of 4 days of heavy rain (end of September/beginning of October).

The Pinot Noir and Muscat were harvested at the end of September. We waited until October 6 to start again with all the other varieties. The weather was dry and constantly hot until the end of October. All Rieslings have a high acidity level (6 to 7g/l H2SO4) and good maturity (12 to 15 potential alc). Vineyards on the valley floor (Herrenweg) produced dry style Gewurztraminer; the hillsides were much richer, culminating with VT in Goldert and Windsbuhl, and an SGN in the Heimbourg vineyard (1st since 1994!). Noble rot has really spread massively across most Pinot Gris vineyards. The VTs were manufactured in Windsbuhl and Clos Jebsal, the SGNs in Rotenberg, Heimbourg, Jebsal and Clos Windsbuhl (the last one is a Trie Spéciale). Most wines ferment very slowly. As usual, no wine has been chaptalized or inoculated with yeast. The entire estate was cultivated biodynamically. Average yields were 35.4 hl/ha.

 

Le millésime 2005 en Alsace a connu un hiver relativement sec, idéal pour planter des vignes, jusqu’à fin mars. De fortes pluies, tant espérées, ont apporté toute l’eau dont les vignes auraient besoin au printemps. Les pluies et les températures plus froides ont retardé le débourrement jusqu’à la mi/fin avril. Mai et juin ont été chauds et secs, avec quelques précipitations occasionnelles inégales, qui ont fait fleurir certains vignobles plus tard. La majorité des vignobles entre Gueberschwihr et Hunawihr fleurissaient début juin, mais Thann ne s’est terminé que vers le 20 juin. La quantité de grappes et de raisins était normale (notre système de formation sans couverture a permis de réduire la taille des grappes et le nombre de baies). Nous nous attendions alors à une récolte de taille moyenne.

Juillet et août ont apporté une série de 4 précipitations importantes (10 à 20mm) qui ont été à nouveau idéales pour les vignes. À la fin du mois d’août, l’herbe était encore verte dans les vignes et il n’y avait aucun signe de stress. Il était possible de profiter d’une année sans maladie si tous les soins appropriés étaient donnés.

Le début du mois d’août a été frais, les températures étant souvent bien inférieures à 15 degrés C. Ce type de climat (similaire à 2004 et 2002) a retardé le changement de couleur des raisins à la fin du mois d’août et, plus important encore, est très certainement responsable du niveau d’acidité élevé des vins de 2005.

De la 4ème semaine d’août à la fin des vendanges, le temps a été chaud à très chaud (quelques jours records en septembre). Octobre 2005 a été le deuxième plus chaud après 2001 au cours des 10 dernières années. Inutile de souligner que de telles conditions favorisaient une bonne maturation, une grande acidité (tartrique élevé, faible malique, pH bas), une excellente santé et de petites baies à la peau épaisse. Seuls quelques raisins de Riesling surcultivés souffraient de stress hydrique et avaient du mal à mûrir correctement. La météo a été exceptionnelle pendant les vendanges, à l’exception de 4 jours de fortes pluies (fin septembre/début octobre).

Le pinot noir et le muscat ont été récoltés fin septembre. Nous avons attendu le 6 octobre pour recommencer avec toutes les autres variétés. Le temps était sec et constamment chaud jusqu’à la fin octobre. Tous les rieslings ont un niveau d’acidité élevé (6 à 7g/l H2SO4) et une bonne maturité (de 12 à 15 alc potentiels). Les vignobles du fond de la vallée (Herrenweg) ont produit d Gewurztraminer de style sec; les coteaux étaient beaucoup plus riches, culminant avec des VT dans le Goldert et le Windsbuhl, et un SGN dans le vignoble de Heimbourg (1er depuis 1994!). La pourriture noble s’est vraiment répandue massivement sur la plupart des vignobles de Pinot-Gris. Les VT ont été fabriqués dans le Windsbuhl et le Clos Jebsal, les SGN dans le Rotenberg, Heimbourg, Jebsal et Clos Windsbuhl (le dernier est une Trie Spéciale). La plupart des vins fermentent très lentement. Comme d’habitude, aucun vin n’a été chaptalisé ou inoculé avec des levures. L’ensemble du Domaine était cultivé en biodynamie. Les rendements moyens étaient de 35,4 hl/ha.

Vintage Report

Tokaji Vintage Report / Winter a été doux, mais très long. Le bourgeonnement a été retardé en conséquence et n’a pas été ce que l’on espérait. En mai, il y a eu une terrible tempête de grêle en même temps que le village a connu de fortes inondations. Ces conditions drastiques, combinées au froid et à la pluie, ont affecté la floraison et, finalement, la prise de baies. Les rendements ont également été réduits et les spiritueux étaient faibles en raison de préoccupations concernant l’ensemble du millésime.

Heureusement, le millésime s’est retourné à l’automne. Les conditions estivales chaudes et indiennes ont fait mûrir les baies, mettant l’accent sur les arômes concentrés et les saveurs de fruits brillants. L’acidité est devenue plus douce et la structure des vins était merveilleuse. Au final, les vins du millésime 2005 ont une complexité et un grand potentiel de garde.
