Bordeaux

Bordeaux / If 1981 was forgotten after 1982, the 1983 was completely eclipsed by 1982, although the harvest was large and of high quality throughout Bordeaux. Too much humidity caused by heavy rains hampered production in many places. At Margaux, some wines were even better than 1982. For example, Château Margaux announced that their 1983 surpassed the 1982. One of the best Palmers of all time was Palmer 1983.

The best wine of the vintage, however, was Le Pin – without a doubt. It’s a real bargain, not only for the quality, but also for the price at 1 550 euros per bottle, compared to Le Pin 1982 at 6,500 euros in 2020. Cheval Blanc has also done fabulously. Yquem began a new climb this year. Graves was hit by a hailstorm which resulted in a small and virtually non-existent harvest.

Burgundy

Burgundy: A difficult vintage: hard, tannic red wines and rich, intense whites.

Warm weather only appeared at the end of May to initiate flowering, although it was still relatively cool. Summer started well until the second week of August when the rain arrived. This wet period continued until September, causing rot problems. The warm, sunny weather that returns in mid-September concentrates the grapes more, but is also very favorable to noble rot. The harvest began on September 22 in Côte de Beaune. Remarkably, some of Meursault's white grapes were affected by botrytis, and made a Vendange Tardive wine. The reds were quite tannic and harsh when young; Some have stayed that way, while others have become rounder over time. A vintage to approach selectively with caution.

Champagne

Champagne: The 1983 vintage was one of the decade’s most mature vintages and is at its best today.

This vintage was not born without pain, either. If the 1982 winter was cold and the spring cool, then this year it was many more times so. The damp and flowering. When it finally took place, the weather conditions were excellent. The summer was warm and sunny. As in the previous year, fall rains saved the grapes from drying up. Along with the rains of early September, temperatures fell and the maturing slowed down. The weather improved toward the end of September, and the harvest was reaped in early October. The vintage grew to be even bigger than the 1982 one. The wines have matured noticeably faster than the 1982 vintage. Stylistically, the wines are robust, lush and at a really enjoyable age right now.

California

The California 1983 wine vintage received generally positive reviews from the wine press and critics. It was a year characterized by favorable weather conditions in many regions of California, leading to wines that were often praised for their quality and appeal. Here are some sentiments and observations that the wine press had about the California 1983 vintage:

  1. High Quality: The consensus among wine critics was that California 1983 was a high-quality vintage. The favorable weather conditions throughout the growing season, including warm and dry summers, contributed to the overall quality of the wines.

  2. Ripe Fruit: One of the standout features of the vintage was the ripe and concentrated fruit flavors in the wines. Many California 1983 wines were noted for their luscious and well-developed fruit profiles, with an emphasis on rich, ripe berries and stone fruits.

  3. Balanced Structure: Critics often praised the wines for their balanced structure. The California 1983 wines typically exhibited good acidity, well-integrated tannins, and harmonious proportions, contributing to their overall appeal.

  4. Varietal Expression: Different grape varieties thrived during the vintage. For instance, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel were frequently highlighted for producing outstanding wines that showcased their varietal characteristics.

  5. Consistency: Unlike some vintages marked by variability, California 1983 was seen as a year of consistency, with many wineries producing wines of high quality across a range of price points.

  6. Age-Worthy: While the wines were approachable in their youth, many California 1983 wines were noted for their aging potential. The well-structured reds, in particular, were expected to evolve gracefully over time.

  7. Notable Producers: Several California wineries and producers received accolades for their wines from the 1983 vintage. These wines were often considered benchmarks for the year.

  8. Overall Enthusiasm: Critics and the wine press expressed enthusiasm for the vintage, and many wine enthusiasts and collectors sought out California 1983 wines for their cellars.

Overall, the California 1983 vintage was well-received and continues to be remembered as a successful year in California winemaking. It offered a range of wines that appealed to a broad spectrum of wine lovers, from those seeking approachable and fruit-forward options to those looking for age-worthy bottles with depth and complexity.

Italia

Italy Tb vintage report: The year 1983 was unstable. In Piedmont, although the rains spoiled the flowering phase, a late dry season saved the harvest. The best producers have managed to make a small quantity of excellent wines. In Tuscany, the entire spring was mild and dry, thus guaranteeing fairly early ripening of the grapes. The year 1983 was particularly favorable for the Chianti region, while in Montalcino bad weather during the harvest reduced expectations. The wines are now at their peak of drinkability, although the best modern Chiantis could still do with more aging, with the Barolos and Barbarescos.

Portugal

Declared by most houses, 1983 was an exceptional vintage, with outstanding, powerful wines, it was unjustly overshadowed by the 1977s before and the 1985s which followed. Muscular wines with a great capacity for ageing they are often compared to the 1966s.

Angelo Gaja Vintage Report: Another difficult vintage. It was important to choose the right date. It rained for four days. Some producers harvested too early. Those who waited after the rain had a greater quantity. The quality has gotten better but not great. It was possible that there were a lot of differences in quality.
