The Story

The wine of kings, the king of wines"—that’s the legendary motto gracing the label of Château Gruaud Larose, easily one of the crown jewels of the Saint-Julien appellation. The estate’s history kicks off way back in 1725 with Abbé Gruaud. In 1781, he left the property to his nephew, Chevalier de Larose, who proudly added his own name to the estate.

This is one of the most consistent wines of the vintage, the vast majority of times I've tasted this wine, it has been stunning. And this bottle was no exception! The wine is deep, concentrated and packed with ripe, powerful fruit and all the cigars you can smoke for a year. Dense, long and with the potential to age for decades, while not inexpensive, to taste a sublime Bordeaux of this quality and age, it is worth the bank.

Another beautiful nose, less effusive than the Leoville Las Cases, but better than most and showing a nice floral note along with the cedar, vanilla, earth and fruit. The wine starts slowly but builds on the palate, showing great balance and a lovely core of cherry fruit. Rich, ripe flavors. Nicely nuanced and great satin feel; the wine gives you a lot to think about. Surprisingly good stuff. Parker scored it 96 at his last tasting. I’ll go with 95.

Just a beautiful wine, herbs, red cherries, and spices, swirl appealingly on the bouquet. Throughout there are enticing layers of complexity, green olives, plum tart, cherry, tobacco, smooth tannins, and exquisitely integrated acidity. There are peppers and chocolate on the mid palate, great concentration and a sexy silkiness that keeps luring you on. There are truffles and a wonderful core of fruit that lap at the palate on the enduring, pronounced, slightly saline accented, vivacious finish. This is a remarkable wine, with plenty of life ahead of it. 96 Points
