The Story

The Gruaud Larose terroir is truly remarkable and unique. It is a single vineyard of 80 hectares with gravels from the Gironde estuary, dating from the Mindel Ist and Mindel IInd (about 700 000 years ago), and that in some places are over 18 feet deep. The soil is very poor and sandy, and therefore does not hold water. Drainage is one of the major concerns of a conscientious vine-grower.

It is also an important factor at Gruaud Larose where nineteenth-century underground pottery drains have been found. The natural draining system due to the poor quality of soils, from the hot and dry summers, and mostly from their position on the highest plateau of Saint-Julien - 18 metres high from the sea level -, constantly exposed to the north and west winds, favour both soil and optimum maturity for grapes. In fact, Nature has given here a magical aspect to this unique estate vineyard.

Wine Information

1989 remains memorable. The precocity in maturation and the richness of the grapes were exceptional. A very hot and sunny month of May ensured a rapid development of vegetation. The first flowers were notified around May 20th in the most precocious varieties and situations. Just like the first summer-months, September was hot, sunny and dry. These extremely favourable terms allowed complete ripening in excellent conditions, a regular picking and no excessive rush.

Vintage 1989

Bordeaux: The 2nd in a trio of great vintages and which produced a large harvest of ripe, rich and fleshy wines which generally possess soft, silky tannins, accompanied by a high alcohol level. It was the hottest summer since 1949 and the harvest began on August 28, the earliest since 1893. The grapes were harvested in dry conditions, the only concern being that some acidity levels were low, which which has led to suggestions that some wines would not be suitable for long-term aging. Ten years later, these fears have proven to be largely unfounded, as the best wines are now showing extremely well, showing concentration and great complexity.

Ruby with garnet rim. Scented, cassis, leather, cool note for the vintage, anise and red berries. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, cassis, letaher, slightly tustic for the vintage, I'm more charmed by it than some fellow tasters, detailed and long. 94
