NOTES DE DÉGUSTATION / TASTING NOTES

98-100/100

(Avril 2021)

98-100/100

B WINE ART / CHRISTER BYKLUM
Ruby. Cassis, anise, spices, blueberries, deep, layered and intense nose. Floral, violets notes. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruits, spices, liquorice, intense and deep, layered, velvety texture yet it has grip and structure behind it, such width and energy to it, stunning length. (...).
(May 2021)

98-99/100

JAMES SUCKLING
This is incredibly classic in style with so much currant, lead pencil, crushed stone and sweet tobacco. It's full-bodied with minerally, stoney and powerful tannins. It goes on and on. Real Las Cases here. Solid as a rock. Progresses to violet, graphite and licorice at the end.
(May 2021)

98-99/100

BECKUSTATOR / YVES BECK
(Avril 2021)

The Story

The Grand Vin is the product of exceptional terroirs from the former Léoville estate. These terroirs are located mainly in the Clos Léoville Las Cases, which you pass as you leave Saint- Julien village for Pauillac. They extend over nearly 60ha producing Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet Francs with a complex, polished expression and characteristics which are totally unique to the Grand Vin of Léoville du Marquis de Las Cases and have been widely recognized for years.

Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the largest and oldest classified growths in the Médoc known since 1707. The wine produced here was classified as one of fifteen Second Growths in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.

Today’s Léoville Las Cases was once part of a much larger estate until the time of the French Revolution when a portion of this estate was separated into what is today Château Léoville-Barton. In 1840, the estate was again divided and land that would eventually become Château Léoville-Poyferré was split off. When the 1855 Classification was completed, all three properties from the original Léoville estate were classed as Second Growths. Since the mid 20th century the Delon family have been owners of this estate.

The soil of St Julien is ideal for vines, due to its geographic situation and its climate; every element is present to produce wines of exceptional quality and elegance. Léoville Las Cases' 97 hectares of vineyards are superbly sited on gravelly-clay soils with the largest plot being surrounded by a stone wall and stretching between the village of St-Julien and Château Latour.

Wine Information

After a rainy and mild winter, a wet and warm spring confirmed the general earliness that marked the beginning of 2020. Thereafter, the weather conditions became more favourable to the smooth development of the vine and its fruits, even if we could deplore a lower volume than the previous year. With low rainfall from the second half of August onwards, as well as good temperature variations, the grapes showed ideal aromatic and phenolic ripeness at harvest.

The Grand Vin de Léoville Las Cases is already particularly complete, fresh and elegant. With an extraordinary length, it combines tension with the fullness of complex aromas and perfect ripeness.

2020  Château Léoville Las Cases St. Julien Dark garnet in color, the wine pops with aromas of tobacco leaf, cigar box, cedar, herbs, black currants, coffee and spice. Refined, fresh, polished and firm, the fruit is vibrant, long and intense. The tannins are ripe  almost creamy in texture. The finish is long, regal and compelling, leaving you with layer, of black currants and cassis. Give this at least 12-15 years before popping a cork and enjoy it for the next 3 decades after that. The wine is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, 13.68% ABV, 3.80 pH. The harvest took place from September 12 - September 27, making this the earliest vintage since 1989. 96-98  Pts

Leoville Las Cases CC - 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Franc. 13,68% alcohol. Sophisticated and classy on the nose, very distinct with black cherries, black tea and tobacco leaf. Spectacular on the midpalate with a silky texture, yet the wine was very concentrated, with great depth, strong structure, awesome complexity, and a mega long finish. Incredible to taste a wine of great concentration and at the same time being so silky in texture. 99p.

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. An almost intellectual wine with initially closed character. Slowly opening up releasing an aroma reminiscent of blackcurrants, elderberries, mulberries and hints of sloe. Fine toasting aroma, dark chocolate, hints of vanilla and oriental spices. On the palate well structured with excellent depth, length and freshness, fine, savoury character with elegant minerality, expressive fruit and lingering floral hints in the aftertaste. An iron fist in a glove of silk.
