The Story

The Grand Vin is the product of exceptional terroirs from the former Léoville estate. These terroirs are located mainly in the Clos Léoville Las Cases, which you pass as you leave Saint- Julien village for Pauillac. They extend over nearly 60ha producing Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet Francs with a complex, polished expression and characteristics which are totally unique to the Grand Vin of Léoville du Marquis de Las Cases and have been widely recognized for years.

Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the largest and oldest classified growths in the Médoc known since 1707. The wine produced here was classified as one of fifteen Second Growths in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.

Today’s Léoville Las Cases was once part of a much larger estate until the time of the French Revolution when a portion of this estate was separated into what is today Château Léoville-Barton. In 1840, the estate was again divided and land that would eventually become Château Léoville-Poyferré was split off. When the 1855 Classification was completed, all three properties from the original Léoville estate were classed as Second Growths. Since the mid 20th century the Delon family have been owners of this estate.

The soil of St Julien is ideal for vines, due to its geographic situation and its climate; every element is present to produce wines of exceptional quality and elegance. Léoville Las Cases' 97 hectares of vineyards are superbly sited on gravelly-clay soils with the largest plot being surrounded by a stone wall and stretching between the village of St-Julien and Château Latour.

Written Notes

It had more straw and chalk to its nose, vimful and vigorous in a spicy way without being spicy. There was still a wealth of plummy fruit there and almost a touch of cinnamon, blending into a foresty wood. The palate was smooth and minerally with nice grip and length but an overall milder impression, but like that 2004 Petrus showed, that can be a good thing! Very pencilly, the Las Cases was initially outclassed by the Rausan Segla but surpassed it in the end

Medium-intense, brick red colour. Rich, complex and classic nose shows led pencil, mint, black currant, and farmyard aromas. Intense and rich mouthfeel with great acidic and tannic grip. The aftertaste shows firm tannins and concentrated fruit of black currants. The aftetaste lasts long with cedary aromas. A beautiful and seductive wine.

The 1945 Léoville–Las Cases was one of the standouts of this monumental 1945 dinner. Conspicuously deep in color, it has a stunning bouquet, quite opulent in style, offering vivid red berry fruit, cedar and mint. Think of 1945 Mouton's younger cousin – that sense of deftly controlled opulence. The palate reins everything back in with layers of black fruit, a fine bead of acidity, perfect acidity and harmony and a dash of spice toward the persistent finish. You know, it reminds me of the exquisite 1985, yet this is from another generation. Fabulous. Tasted at Koala's 1945 dinner.

Mid shoulder fill only. Bright ruby, thin orange rim. Stunning nose, scented, layered, somewhat rich actually, subdued yet intense, floral, cedar, superb nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, mellow and polished, but still there, slightly warm and sweet fruit but subdued, extremelly long. 98
