The Story

Richebourg is a king of a wine: the colonnade of the Louvre, the Château of Versailles. You are impressed by its finesse, its length and its delicate sensations, endlessly changing. The fact that no element dominates the others enables you to appreciate all of its aromas, on the nose and on the palate. In any given vintage, Richebourg is always one of the last wines to be drunk. Not because it is too aggressive when young; simply because it needs time to reveal its full complexity.

Wine Information

"We tend to count too much on science, when, before, people gave importance to natural things. One thing is certain, the ancients were not dumb, and if they established a tradition it was because of their experience. They tried to eliminate unfavorable elements and preserve what worked best." -Henri Jayer

Vintage 1983

Burgundy: A difficult vintage: hard, tannic red wines and rich, intense whites.

Warm weather only appeared at the end of May to initiate flowering, although it was still relatively cool. Summer started well until the second week of August when the rain arrived. This wet period continued until September, causing rot problems. The warm, sunny weather that returns in mid-September concentrates the grapes more, but is also very favorable to noble rot. The harvest began on September 22 in Côte de Beaune. Remarkably, some of Meursault's white grapes were affected by botrytis, and made a Vendange Tardive wine. The reds were quite tannic and harsh when young; Some have stayed that way, while others have become rounder over time. A vintage to approach selectively with caution.

Written Notes

Was very fragrant with sexy, sultry, sweet red fruit. There were supporting aromas of chocolate, caramel, carob and a pinch of brown sugar. Some overripe plums, right before they enter prune territory, rounded out the nose, which seemed to be on a faster evolutionary track. Then again, it was twenty-one years old, so fast is probably a bad word choice! The rich fruit carried over to the palate and flavors, and there was lots of grip here; the wine was surprisingly, very sturdy. The palate exploded more than any other of the previous three wines. The fruit held and remained very exotic, the finish stayed balanced and reined in, and its earth flavors exerted themselves on the backside. It was outstanding
