The Story

The wine-growing village of Flagey-Échezeaux lies in the " Plain ", so-called, between Vougeot and Vosne-Romanée in the Côte de Nuits. Facing east, the Grands-Échezeaux vines are a prolongation of Musigny following the North-South axis of the Côte, but more regular and less broken in their layout. At the bottom end, the " Climat " known as La Combe d'Orveau separates them from Musigny. The Échezeaux vineyards, for their part, divide the Clos d...

"We tend to count too much on science, when, before, people gave importance to natural things. One thing is certain, the ancients were not dumb, and if they established a tradition it was because of their experience. They tried to eliminate unfavorable elements and preserve what worked best." -Henri Jayer

Vintage 1985

1985 Burgundy by Clive Coates MW / The 1985 vintage represents a turning point in the wine history of Burgundy. Before this date, on the whole, winegrowers made wine, merchants bought it, assembled several plots, if necessary, and sold it. Written Notes

We began with a 1985 Jayer Echezeaux, whose nose was all Jayer, all the way. ‘Fantastic fragrance,’ cooed Martine. Aromas of deep purple lilacs, flowers and fruits opened the door to a big, rich palate. It was a touch cold coming straight from the cellar, muting its finish at first, but after twenty minutes of air, its acidity started to sizzle. Musk, jasmine and other secondary spices emerged. Its perfume got sexier and sexier, and its finish got bigger and bigger. Mint, slate, forest, and all about the purple were other notes I took. Gil likened the ‘depth of nose sung like Madame Pompadou herself’.
