The Story

Cros Parantoux is a premier cru situated in Vosne-Romanée and is now one of the most celebrated wines in all of Burgundy. Whether this is because of the world wide celebrity of Henri Jayer, or whether the quality of this site made the reputation of Henri Jayer is difficult to say but either way, it has been an extraordinary marriage for more than 50 years now. As a result, Cros Parantoux is on almost everyone’s very short list of premiers crus that merit elevation to grand cru status. 

It is a small vineyard, measuring only 1.01 ha (2.5 acres) and there are only two owners, Domaines Méo- Camuzet and Henri Jayer, split 29.5 ares and 71.5, respectively. Jayer, who is now 82 years old, leases the majority of his portion to his nephew Emmanuel Rouget and since 1989, there have been 3 different versions of Cros Parantoux produced

Vintage 1996

When a vintage like 1996 passes and 13 moon chages take place in the year many growers expect difficult moments to come.

Eventhoug the spring was marvellous and the very arly springbut was not affected by any frost.and due to the high tepertures the flowering rarely ever seen before (only one generation !)
The arrival of the summer ...warm and dry in June, cooler but still dry in July and August. A perfect weather with short periods of rainfall each time followed by intense suneshine untill the harvest helped the grapes to finish maturation (Wonderfull natural degrees from 12° to 13°9).

The weather during the harvest was relatively cold, cloudy but dry allowing the growers to harvest each parcel at the best moment of maturity.
The cold nights stabalised the level of acidity in the grapes and most important protected the grapes from rot.

Our first impressions on the Red wines are very promessing with deep colours and good and intense aromas

For the White wines we detect the sugar/acidity balance of a “ Great ” vintage. Despite of the relatively high yields the wines show power and complexity remembering of the 1990 vintage (equal yields).

One very distinctif sign of a very promessing vintage is the smile in the faces of the growers.

There was one more wine for lunch, a 1996 Henri Jayer Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux. Hello, dolly. I remarked how any time a bottle of Jayer is open, it is a special occasion, and the 1996 was Exhibit A. Its nose was full of vitamins and game along with this rich and pungently perverse fruit. It was like deep purple putting on a pair of hot latex pants. There were great flavors, and a minor delicacy debate broke out. This was jammy, juicy, gamey and ‘super duper.’ It had the slate and the length on its finish. I wanted more (96+).
