The Story

Chapelle d’Ausone is the second wine of the famous Bordeaux wine estate Chateau Ausone. It is located in the Saint Emilion region in Bordeaux, France, and is under the directive of the Saint Emilion Appellation. The primary wine of the estate, Chateau Ausone, is one of only four wines, alongside Chateau Angelus, Cheval Blanc and Pavie to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classe (A) in the Saint-Emilion classification for wine. The winery is located on the Right Bank of France’s Bordeaux wine growing region.

Many claim the high quality wine originating from the Chateau is due to the soil composition in the area, a blend of sand and clay residing on limestone which is unique to the area. Due to the smaller nature of this vineyard, the entire harvest can be picked over the course of two afternoons.

Vintage 1959

Bordeaux 1959 was proclaimed wine year of the century by overzealous journalists. Although it was a great year, it just wasn't the best year of the century. The year started with ideal weather conditions. The summer was perfect until the fall, when the rains arrived in mid-September. But the rains gave way to hot and dry weather, preparing a magnificent setting for the start of the harvest. The result was a truly ripe and juicy harvest. Reds are generally full-bodied, with mild acidity and an oily mouthfeel that comes from the high alcohol content. Although the vintage is generally compared to 1961, it has much in common with the 1949. The Sauternes vintage was also a success and the region produced very long-lived wines. Once again, Château Lafite-Rothschild was a complete success, sharing the title of best wine of the vintage with Haut-Brion. Hot on their heels are Pétrus, which must be decanted for at least three hours before drinking, and La-Mission-Haut-Brion.

Written Notes

We changed gears with a 1959 Ausone, which The Inspector didn’t like. It was a bit of a cherry bomb with some good medicine to it. There was some yeast to its chocolate, and nice wintergreen flavors on its lean and clean palate. Someone wasn’t in the clean camp, noting ‘chicken shit.’ I saw what he was saying, but nonetheless, it was rich, hearty and solid (93).
