The Story

Ausone owes its unique quality and longevity to a magic marriage of situation and soil. The steep slopes of the vineyard are arranged like an amphitheatre, facing southeast, which gives perfect exposure and maximum protection, and the soil is a mixture of clay and sand on limestone. When old vines and the ability to pick the entire vineyard quickly, due to the small size, are added to the recipe the result is something special. Ausone grows in...

1982 versus 1990 Bordeaux

When you receive an invitation to a comparative tasting of all Premier Crus from the two great vintages of 1982 and 1990, you drop everything and clear your diary. 1982 and 1990 represent the beginning and end of perhaps the greatest era in the history of Bordeaux. During these nine years there were only two vintages that could be seen as disappointments: 1984 and 1987. It could rightly be stated that the period fr...

Vintage 1982

1982 by James Suckling

The 1982 vintage in Bordeaux changed the world of wine and my life. It was the first vintage I tasted from barrel as a young wine writer working for the American magazine The Wine Spectator, and I was amazed at how magnificent the quality of a young red could be in barrel.

I remember the first barrel samples I tasted in the summer of 1983 at Château Prieuré-Lichine with the late wine author and winemaker Alexis Lic...

Written Notes

The 1982 Ausone came from the dark era of Ausone, that mid-60s to mid-80s era when the wine simply was not great like before and after. This was much mintier and wintier, so to speak. Red fruits gave way to Christmas trees and pudding. At first, it was softer, easier and tender, but it put on weight with time in the glass and with food. It fattened up and out (93).

Fully mature, and on the lean, firm, bright side, you find wet earth, smoke, tobacco, flowers and cherries on the nose. The perfume is more interesting than the medium bodied, firm, palate. The red fruit is firm and there is a distinct, green edge in the finish. There is a lot to like here, but not a lot to love.

A great nose of berry, leather and spice. Still dark and showing good color. Intensely flavored cassis on the palate, but the fruit turns ever so slightly tart and astringent on the finish. Parker had great hopes for this wine, but ‘only’ scored it a 94 on release due to it’s backward and unapproachable condition in early age. I’d say the wine resolved itself nicely with age, but lacks a bit of ripeness and charm. I score it 89.
