The Story

Ausone owes its unique quality and longevity to a magic marriage of situation and soil. Written Notes

The 1912 Ausone was clear in colour with a tuile core. It sported an intriguing, mercurial nose, delicate at first with rose-hip, singed wool and then I detected a subtle chimney soot aroma. I expected the aromatics to diffuse with aeration – quite the opposite – it seems to gain cohesion and even reveal vestiges of red berry fruit, as if embarrassed they are still there after so many years! The palate is indicative of its age, not unlike the 1912 Lafite-Rothschild that I encountered just a few weeks earlier. There remains freshness here, frail at first but like the aromatics, it appears to gain harmony and substance from the ether and delivers a light tertiary finish. For a forgotten mediocre 106-year old Saint-Émilion, I could not ask for anything more. Tasted at the Ausone vertical in London.
