The Story

The Gruaud Larose terroir is truly remarkable and unique. It is a single vineyard of 80 hectares with gravels from the Gironde estuary, dating from the Mindel Ist and Mindel IInd (about 700 000 years ago), and that in some places are over 18 feet deep. The soil is very poor and sandy, and therefore does not hold water. Vintage 1985

Bordeaux 1985/ An extraordinary vintage. Particularly elegant in their early years, these wines are now mellow and suave with considerable finesse. The Médoc wines, supple with mellow tannins, are deliciously soft and fruity. The Pomerols and Saint Emilions possess a marvellous combination of concentration and finesse. The dry white wines are rich and complex. The sweet wines are ample, honeyed and fruity.

Written Notes

Ruby with thin brick rim. Massive nose, leaps out of the glass, intense, pure, elegant, tobacco, cigars, gorgeous Bordeaux. Perfect texture, some floral notes, balanced, good acidity, leather, plums, very nice fruit, cassis and long length. Way better than expected, even if it is quite praised. 95

Gruaud Larose 2. Cru Classe St. Julien – fabulous thick layered nose of blueberries, fine acidity, truffles, fine grained tannin, great balance, depth and finish. As excellent as Leoville Barton but different style and I think it won’t keep as long as Leoville Barton. 95p.
