The Story

Since 1983, Denis Durantou has been at the helm of this historic estate. He has quietly performed something of a revolution, introducing a host of innovations and bringing his wine-making philosophy to one of the greatest terroirs in Bordeaux. The 4.5 hectares used for the grand vin are situated next to the church in Pomerol on gravel and clay soils. A further 1.5 hectares of on sandy soils account for the excellent Petite Eglise.

Bordeaux 2017 - A year of contrast

Life is not fair and neither is nature. As the earth warms, flowering becomes earlier and the risk of frost damage increases. Few winemakers remember the frosts of 1991, but their legacy is still haunting. When meteorologists predicted a cold blast on the nights of April 27 and 28, there was a real sense of panic. Written Notes

Tasted in November 2021. A textbook Pomerol with plenty of spicy black fruit, intense and creamy, great complexity and depth, sophisticated and terrific structure and long finish. More elegance here than in 2018 and 2019. Excellent wine.

  • 97p

Picked between 12th and 22nd of September while Cabernet Franc was picked solely on the 22nd of September. 70% new wood. Ruby. Scented, floral, nuanced, seductive nose, layered and detailed, blueberries and blackberries, layered, refined, seductive even at this stage. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, smooth, elegant, detailed, playful, lovely balance, rich and intense, riper yet smooth and soothing. Bit of warmth in the finish. 14,3 alcohol. 95-97

A blend of 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 L'Eglise Clinet opens with crème de cassis, black forest cake and preserved plums notes with suggestions of underbrush, lilacs and star anise plus an invigorating spark of Bing cherries. Medium to full-bodied and built like a brick house with very firm, ripe tannins and very refreshing acidity supporting the tightly wound muscular fruit, it finishes with epic persistence and bags of energy. This will be extremely long lived! 96-98p
