Characteristics of the Palmer 1959 vintage

A truly outstanding vintage and the first to be qualified as “the vintage of the century”.

Flowering took place in excellent conditions thanks to fine, mild weather in spring. July was hot and dry with exceptionally high temperatures. The dry weather continued in August and this led to widespread vine stress. As a result, the ripening process slowed down considerably until some welcome rainfall ...

Vintage 1959

Bordeaux 1959 was proclaimed wine year of the century by overzealous journalists. Although it was a great year, it just wasn't the best year of the century. Fine looking bottle. Level was by the neck. Decanted one hour before tasting. Healthy, bright colour, without any signs of age. A lovely, ripe, prune and spicy nose. Exotic fruit and some wider scents appeared later. A rich wine with excellent complexity and concentration of fruit. Beautiful texture on the palate, which was full  mouth filling and almost creamy. Nice tannic backbone. A long and lingering aftertaste. What a presence - ready now but will drink well for five to ten years.

L'Acheteur negociant bottling. Top shoulder fill. Cork stated nothing. Bright garnet, brick rim. Scented, liquorice, floral and a touch of mint on the nose. Red berries. Fresh acidity, drying palate, dusty and unpleasant, dry finish. Again it ads with air, getting more body.
