Written Notes

The 1919 Talbot comes from a vintage that was affected by heavy mildew pressure in July followed by a very hot August and finally rain before harvest that commenced on 20 September and finished 15 October. This bottle was reconditioned in 2007. Its appearance is commensurate with its age, small degradation on the bricked rim, perhaps slightly deeper than I expect. The bouquet is pleasant but not powerful, well defined with satisfying freshness. There is an element of grey rot entering the vat although it does not overwhelm the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied, simple with vestiges of red fruit. It is by no means complex or profound, maybe a little thin though drinkable and with no oxidation. Overall, this 1919 Talbot is more interesting than some time-drying Claret, but it deserves light applause in its dotage. Tasted at the centenary Château Talbot vertical at the property.
