Written Notes

The 1934 Talbot comes from a bottle recondition in 2007, a wet season where double the average rainfall was reported in mid-August, following a turnaround in the weather and a perfect September. Harvest began on 14 September. It has an appealing bouquet with rustic red berry fruit, damp undergrowth, peppermint and sage, fully mature but defined and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with an almost citrus-fresh entry. Fine acidity here, balanced though not as complex as the top-tier Left Bank wines of the vintage. I appreciate the sour cherry note towards the finish. It’s not a persistent Saint-Julien, but still enjoyable if you have a penchant for ancient Claret. Tasted at the centenary Château Talbot vertical at the property.
