The Story

Undeniably, Talbot is one of the most famous Médoc wines. This fine reputation is no doubt due to a mysterious combination of factors, such as the size of its vineyard, nearly one hundred hectares, and the regularity of its wine.  Nearly a century in the same family, the name Talbot is concise and hard-hitting, easy to pronounce in all languages and a part of our history… However, the first thing that makes Talbot popular is the wonderful nature of its wine.

‘For many, Talbot embodies the ideal Saint Julien, a generous bouquet, extremely stable and dependable during aging,’ emphasize Bettane and Desseauve in their Guide to French Wines.

It’s true. A champion of longevity, even when young Talbot is pleasant and rounded, ever distinguished by silky, mild and very civilized tannins. Talbot possesses an extraverted nature. It’s never withdrawn into itself, and has the courtesy of being in a good mood every day. It’s a racy wine, with complex marks of Havana and licorice, classically delicious without ever the slightest hint of austerity.

Legend relates that the name of this imposing estate originates with Connétable Talbot, a famous English warrior, defeated at the battle of Castillon 1453. Talbot is one of the Medoc’s oldest estates, its glory never tainted. Through the years it has been fortunate enough to remain in good hands. The owners are Nancy Bignon- Cordier and her family. They are the fourth generation of Cordiers to manage this Saint-Julien fourth classified growth.

Wine Information

Barrel Cellars
In contrast with the austerity of concrete, here one encounters the curves and warmth of wood.
No fewer than 1,800 barrels repose in this monastic atmosphere.
Lined up in the cool half-light, the cellar is maintained at 16°, where they mature the wine in every sense of the word.
14 months of aging in 50 to 60 percent new barrels originating from eight different coopers.
The choice of cooper, the length of aging, and the pace of racking vary, based on the style and development of the various lots. Regular tasting of the wines determines these choices; aging is adapted to each wooden tank’s character until final blending.
Depending on the vintage, Talbot’s top wine represents 50 to 60% of the estate’s production.
Rigorous selection enables the production of a second wine, le Connétable Talbot, with an outstanding quality to price ratio.

Vintage 1983

Bordeaux / If 1981 was forgotten after 1982, the 1983 was completely eclipsed by 1982, although the harvest was large and of high quality throughout Bordeaux. Too much humidity caused by heavy rains hampered production in many places. At Margaux, some wines were even better than 1982. For example, Château Margaux announced that their 1983 surpassed the 1982. One of the best Palmers of all time was Palmer 1983.

The best wine of the vintage, however, was Le Pin – without a doubt. It’s a real bargain, not only for the quality, but also for the price at 1 550 euros per bottle, compared to Le Pin 1982 at 6,500 euros in 2020. Cheval Blanc has also done fabulously. Yquem began a new climb this year. Graves was hit by a hailstorm which resulted in a small and virtually non-existent harvest.

Written Notes

Fill just a few millimeters below the perfect cork. Ruby, brick rim. Licorice, hung meat, leather, cassis, fruit is slightly in a ball still. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, elegant body. Lovely balance, mouthwatering, refreshing and very long. In my fathers cellar since release more or less.
