The Story

Undeniably, Talbot is one of the most famous Médoc wines. This fine reputation is no doubt due to a mysterious combination of factors, such as the size of its vineyard, nearly one hundred hectares, and the regularity of its wine.  Nearly a century in the same family, the name Talbot is concise and hard-hitting, easy to pronounce in all languages and a part of our history… However, the first thing that makes Talbot popular is the wonderful natu...

Vintage 1955

In Bordeaux, 1955 began with unstable weather conditions just before summer, but turned into an extremely favorable season by the end of the year. A glorious, sunny and warm, if not hot, period prevailed throughout August and September, until the right amount of much-needed rain arrived. The harvest turned out to be of the highest quality. Written Notes

The 1955 Talbot is a vintage that I drank two or three times at the beginning of my professional wine career. It was a great growing season marred by mid-September rains, although in many places the precipitation was beneficial. Harvest commenced 5 October and finished 20 October. It has a deep colour, not quite as clear as the 1945 but with little ageing on the rim. The bouquet is very attractive with red berry fruit, cola, leather and wild mint mixed with incense, better than those aforementioned bottles I consumed many years ago. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, slightly meaty in style, the archetypal “old school” Claret. I admire the density of this Talbot, not muscular but perhaps “big boned”. I also admire the small uptick in precision on the finish. This is a very attractive Talbot that maybe does not quite deliver the complexity of the 1945, but continues to give pleasure after 63 years. Tasted at the centenary Château Talbot vertical at the property.
