The Story

Chambertin – Domaine Armand Rousseau

Chambertin gained a reputation from the patronage of Napoleon I, who is rumoured not to have drunk anything else and watered down his Chambertin with plenty of water. He favoured it at five to six years old and never drank more than half a bottle with a meal. When the ex-Emperor was exiled on St. Helena, he was forced to drink claret, since that was easier to ship to the isolated island.

2016 RED BURGUNDY VINTAGE REPORT

The 2016 harvest was, of course, later for Pinot Noir in the Côtes de Nuits, and some climats had different productions depending on how they weathered the frost of April 26th. In this report I will talk about each of the producers’ allocations to illustrate the variations between the totals from the 2015 and 2016 vintages. Written Notes

The 2016 Chambertin Grand Cru has a beguiling bouquet with copious red berry fruit, crushed minerals, delicate wilted rose petal and light tobacco scents. It has a crystalline beauty. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin, wonderful focus and immense poise. This is a class act with bewildering tension and incredible poise towards the finish. God made wine so it could taste like this. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Lost two-thirds of their fruit. 100% new oak.
Dense and rich and yet so much more expressive than, say, Dugat-Py’s. Very rich and powerful and shaded. Dense, ripe sumptuous fruit – very ripe red fruits rather than black fruits. Crunchy and lively – not at all heavy or tannic although there is massively fine structure underneath. Deceptively clean and fresh and energetic.

Regular readers of this report will know how much I love this wine, sourced from four separate parcels amounting to 2.55 hectares. Aged in 100% new oak, it's a Grand Cru red that will age for two decades or more. Harmonious, complex and racy, with notes of orange zest, black cherry, forest floor and clove spice. Fine, nuanced and almost outrageously long on the palate. 2028-40
