Chambertin gained a reputation from the patronage of Napoleon I, who is rumoured not to have drunk anything else and watered down his Chambertin with plenty of water. He favoured it at five to six years old and never drank more than half a bottle with a meal. I had the 1999 Rousseau Chambertin at least three times this year, and one of them was near-perfect. The other two had a little extra ripeness and sweetness that didn’t float my boat as much, but they all kept me sailing along lol. It just goes to show that even the great wines can give different impressions on different nights, in different places. Bottles of the same wine are different. On one night, I didn’t want anything different from the ’99. It was the last wine of our Burgundy night in Singapore, and ‘the bomb’ came to mind, or my mind was already bombed, one or the other lol. Fruit bomb was also in another note for this wine, interestingly enough. There was so much fruit here, and spectacular sweetness, not a touch too much like those others bottles! It had a rocket-like finish, and exotic spice. I see a lot of similar words when I am describing my 99-point wines like wow and special, add one more: awesome, because that’s what this Rousseau was for a night (99, Singapore).

The Domaine Rousseau is the largest owner in Chambertin, with 2.15 hectares out of the total of 12.9 available. Their example, made with a goodly proportion of the stems and reared in new oak, is frequently one of the very best Burgundies of the vintage, and this 1999 is no exception.

The wine is full, the tannins now mellow, the new oak aspect well absorbed and the wine fully in its prime. I don't think it will improve further. But there is very lovely sweet fruit, and no lack of vigour. Complex, long on the palate, refined and absolutely delicious. A real treat!

Armand Rousseau Chambertin Vertical in HK. One of the best was Rousseau Chambertin 1999 / Fine looking bottle. Decanted for two hours. Deep purple colour, with orange and ruby reflections. Even after two hours’ decanting, the wine was slightly closed on the nose, however with some swirling, and little bit of patience everything opened up and blossomed into the most multifaceted and intense bouquet one could long for. Enormous structure but in such a fine balance that despite its substance, the wine shows great elegance and class. On the palate it was marvellously sweet and tasty with plum, strawberry and cherry aromas and flavours that linger indefinitely. 96 points
