The Story

The monks of the Abbey of Bèze owned the Clos de Bèze in Gevrey-Chambertin, given to them in 630 by Amalgaire, Duke of Basse Bourgogne. They cleared the land and planted of the vines in what  later became the "Clos de  Bèze", a true Clos surrounded by walls.

Wine Information

In short, 2005 promises to be a great year for aging, as generous in quantity as in quality. The period of vegetative rest which extends from October to February was marked by a winter slightly more rigorous and longer than the previous years, with normal rainfall and overdrawn sunning except in January. Vintage 2005

2005 VINTAGE in Burgundy / Hopes made way for certainty.

2005 promises to produce outstanding whites, with elegance and opulence beyond the norm, and superb, seductive and well-structured red wines.

Written Notes

“A positively kaleidoscopic nose features a wonderful panoply of spice and fruit aromas that offer something new and different with every sniff. The rich, full and ut- terly classic flavors are a study of the harmonious liaison of refinement and power that culminate in an explosive and driving finish that is even longer than that of the Clos St. Jacques yet it sacrifices nothing in terms of balance, harmony or transparency. A strikingly good wine packed with upside potential. While pronouncements of this sort are always fraught, it’s possible that the 2005 Bèze could one day rival the best Rousseau Bèze ever...”(98pts BH)

Fullish, youthful colour. Fragrant nose. Ripe and rich. Nicely austere. Very good grip. Fullish body. Ample, reserved, profound and intense. Very fine indeed.

  • 98p
Bright red, floral, red berries, strawberries, intense, slightly edgy, but rounded for Clos de Beze, getting softer with air. Fresh acidity, leaner and more focused than Chambertin, great length.
