Vintage 1985

1985 Burgundy by Clive Coates MW / The 1985 vintage represents a turning point in the wine history of Burgundy. Written Notes

The 1985 Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze magnum, just wow.  This wine wasn’t just rich, it was wealthy, at least three generation’s worth lol.  The energy here was practically existential, and while it was the oldest and wisest of the flight, it still had this baby fat goodness that made me want to make strange sounds and noises with my lips.  Its fruits were darker and blacker, and while it had great development, it was still very young.  It was immediately crowned WOTN by many.  Thank you Peter (99M).

A wonderfully spicy and soaring, very expressive, even kaleidoscopic nose of spicy, pure and very Gevrey aromas that have now gone mostly, if not completely secondary leads to sweet medium weight plus flavors that are not especially big or powerful but there is so much velvet and luscious complexity that this is utterly seductive. While there is still a touch of tannin on the wonderfully long finish, this is now for all and intents and purposes resolved and I would be drinking it now and over the next 25 years. Beautiful juice.
