The Story

The Montrachet of Marquis de Laguiche belongs to this Pantheon. This property (2.06 hectares - 5.15 acres) is actually the largest parcel of the Montrachet vineyard and has been in the hands of the Laguiche family since 1363. The Drouhin family is in charge of its cultivation and vinification and, since 1947, has spread and preserved its worldwide renown.

In the southern part of the Côte de Beaune, the estate of the Marquis de Laguiche is e...

Vintage 1996

1996 VINTAGE in Burgundy

Maturity levels were in general high following a long hot summer. The wines from the famous Pinot Noir have an intense ruby red colour with lush red fruit aromas. They are wines that are comparable with the outstanding 88s and 89s. The whites are just as outstanding full-bodied with elegant vibrant Chardonnay fruit and sweet white flower and grilled nut aromas. These are wines that have the potential to age magnific...

A famous name in the most famous white Burg appellation. The elephant under the cork, so to speak, is that so many white Burgundies from this vintage, and subsequently, have been so below average, suffering from random oxidation. There has been much debate about the source of the problem, and numerous theories, but anyone who has drunk a lot of these wines will have had far too many disappointments. So one approaches them with trepidation at the very least.

In this case, it could not have been more out of place. Best white Burg I have seen for a very long time. This was a simply glorious wine.

Incredible intensity, bacon rind, orange zest. This was a seriously complex wine, still vibrantly fresh, balanced, impressive length. A truly wonderful wine.

We started with a 1996 Joseph Drouhin Marquis de Laguiche, which performed in fine fashion. Despite a lot of opinion out there that there is a significant amount of prematurely oxidized white Burgundies in the market from about 1995 onwards, with a lot of different hypotheses why, I have to say that I have been fairly lucky in my drinking them over the past few years, although I do not drink as many whites as often as those more opinionated than I. I do know that the problem exists, more so with a combination of certain producers and certain vintages, but this bottle had no issues for sure. The Drouhin was spectacular, delivering everything it should have and then some. Smoky aromas of butter, corn and minerals graced its forward yet coiled nose, and the breed of Montrachet rippled through every inch of its core. One could easily lose one’s nose for minutes in its aromatics, its firm nose anchored by the great acidity of the 1996 vintage. The palate was delicious, still youthful but also seemingly in a great spot, still showing the vigor of youth along with hints of mature nuances, particularly in the smokiness and sweetness of its fruit flavors. It was lip-smackingly good

I drank a bottle of 1996 Joseph Drouhin Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche in Macau at the restaurant Don Alfonso 1890 at the Lisboa Hotel. It showed wonderful aromas of cream, light toffee, dried lemons, and apple crumble. It was very similar at first on the palate but then opened to a full body of lemon meringue and fresh citrus fruit character. It was so lively and intense. Racy and flavorful, it was a wonderful texture and length. Drink now.
