Wine Description
The Story
Since early years, the production of Belle Epoque has grown year after year. Belle Epoque Rosé was created in 1976. The excellent vintage of Chardonnay in 1993 inspired Hervé Deschamps, cellar master at Perrier-Jouët, to produce a small quantity of Blanc de Blancs:
-“The production is very small-scale – only one per cent of all Belle Epoque champagnes. The grapes are grown almost exclusively in one of our top vineyards in Cramant. Rosé makes up 8 per cent of the sales, and we hope to see that figure grow. Despite the larger volume we now produce, the production is still expensive: high levels of humidity and the way the bottles are piled take their toll on the gilding. The cost of a bottle without any contents is 10 euros!”
A multi-sensorial wine, made up of delicate and complex harmonies: a perfect balance between the character of the generous year and the House style.
Delicious with desserts that combine the fondant with the crunchy, its flavours will express themselves consummately if served between 10 and 12° (the temperature can also be slightly higher if accompanying a meal). If conditions allow, you may keep your Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Rosé 2004 for over ten years.
Wine Information
Crafted only in remarkable vintages, this wine is the result of a year of nature’s generosity.
2006 Spring was blighted by late frosts, in summer the weather turned much hotter punctuated by a few storms, enabling flowering to take place successfully. The nature finally brought perfect weather in September to enable the grapes to fully ripen in time for the harvest.
With grapes sourced from the best terroirs in Cramant, Avize and Le Mesnil, the Chardonnays (50%) bring elegance and floral freshness to the blend. Generous and rounded, the 2006 vintage combines the elegance of the Chardonnay with the richness of the Pinot Noirs (45%) from Mailly, Aÿ, Verzy and Rilly; and the rounded aromas of red fruits from the Pinot Meuniers from Dizy (5%). Finally, Pinot Noir red wines (11%) from Vertus and Vincelles give the cuvée its subtle and pure Rosé hue.
This assemblage has developed into a delicate, yet intense, rich and voluptuous wine; this is a cuvée that provokes thoughtful contemplation to appreciate each nuance.
Dosage : 8g/l – Matured for at least six years in the House cellars.
Vintage 2006
A cold winter and springtime frosts laid the foundations for this vintage of abundant yields (12,997 kg/ha). Uneventful flowering was followed by exceptionally hot and sunny weather, which lasted until August. A dank August left producers fearful but fortunately warm, bright conditions in September redressed the balance. Harvest commenced on September 9th, producing grapes high in sugar level but notably low on acidity. The general health of the grapes was sufficient, producing wines which excel over the preceding 2005 vintage, another warm and ample year. The year's greatest wines are supple and expressive and despite the richness they escape being overly heavy. Overt and welcoming upon launch, the best come with excellent capacity for ageing. Winey, and richly fruity characters, most Champagnes regrettably miss some tension and finesse. Wines of the vintage include Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, Krug Vintage and Dom Pérignon Rosé.
