Wine Description
The Story
Cuvée Louise was created in 1979, but as Madame Pommery would have demanded, this prestige cuvee is a product of the very best plots in the Pommery vineyards, reserved specifically for it. In the tradition of Pommery Nature 1874, Cuvée Louise is the only special cuvee with so little sugar.
Thus the wine naturally expresses its exceptional purity. Behind this apparent simplicity are unique processes at each stage of its elaboration that ensure that Cuvée Louise is the quintessence of the House style.
Vintage Pommerys never let you down, and the prestige wine Cuvée Louise pays Madame Pommery the homage she deserves. Our favourite, however, is the fantastically delicate and subtly mineral Cuvée Louise Rosé, which is an unfortunately rare find. It only makes up five per cent of Cuvée Louise’s production.
The Cuvée Louise vineyard, made up exclusively of the top three Grands Crus: Avize and Cramant for the Chardonnays and Aÿ for the Pinot Noir. Vines on the mid-hillside, vines in the air and vines upland… the plots of land in the Cuvée Louise vineyard are selected both for their location at the heart of the terroir, their performance over the years and the rich aroma of their grapes. And by their nature, they most faithfully convey the subtlety of the Pommery style.
The ultimate expression of a genius woman’s personality. Cuvée Louise owes its name to the visionary, avant-garde woman who gave the world a brand-new style, a pure, fine, elegant style all Pommery’s own.
Wine Information
2004 presents itself to the eye with a nice colour and a rare elegance, where the yellow has some subtle greeny touches peeping through, providing it with a wonderful appearance of youth.
NOSE :
On the nose it releases a quantity of unsuspected fragrances, where everything is well ordered and harmonious. It is rich, generous and silky, allowing for some notes of biscuits, resulting from the effect of the yeasts
PALATE :
The mouth is only the infinite extension of everything the nose was able to reveal. It enhances the olfactory sensations, all in a perfect harmony in C major. Vividness remains whilst being blended with nice flavours of hazelnut butter, yeasts and almond paste.
Vintage 1995
A welcome relief after some difficult years in the region. Quantity-wise, it was the seventh high-cropping year in a row. But, in 1995, the quality also excelled, and particularly so for Chardonnay. There were significant frost damages during the spring and the warm but wet weather in the summer ignited mildew and rot problems. The vines cropped heavily and rigorous vineyard work and selection during harvest led to best results. Harvest commenced on September 18th and yielded grapes of a fine balance of sugar and acidity. The vintage has turned out to be much better than first expected and it has emerged from the shadow of the much-hyped 1996. This vintage is marked by elegance of its inviting fruitiness, beautiful balance and slow-building finesse. Its greatest examples include Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires, Dom Pérignon (whole range), Louis Roederer Cristal and Cristal Rosé, Bollinger R.D, Krug Vintage and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne.
