The Story

Cuvée Louise was created in 1979, but as Madame Pommery would have demanded, this prestige cuvee is a product of the very best plots in the Pommery vineyards, reserved specifically for it. In the tradition of Pommery Nature 1874, Cuvée Louise is the only special cuvee with so little sugar.

Thus the wine naturally expresses its exceptional purity. Behind this apparent simplicity are unique processes at each stage of its elaboration that ensure that Cuvée Louise is the quintessence of the House style.

Vintage Pommerys never let you down, and the prestige wine Cuvée Louise pays Madame Pommery the homage she deserves. Our favourite, however, is the fantastically delicate and subtly mineral Cuvée Louise Rosé, which is an unfortunately rare find. It only makes up five per cent of Cuvée Louise’s production.

The Cuvée Louise vineyard, made up exclusively of the top three Grands Crus: Avize and Cramant for the Chardonnays and Aÿ for the Pinot Noir. Vines on the mid-hillside, vines in the air and vines upland… the plots of land in the Cuvée Louise vineyard are selected both for their location at the heart of the terroir, their performance over the years and the rich aroma of their grapes. And by their nature, they most faithfully convey the subtlety of the Pommery style.

The ultimate expression of a genius woman’s personality. Cuvée Louise owes its name to the visionary, avant-garde woman who gave the world a brand-new style, a pure, fine, elegant style all Pommery’s own.

Vintage 1996

Up to this point 1996 has been considered a fantastic vintage which produced classic wines; the best since 1990. A long, dry summer produced grapes of record ripeness with record acidity. Some, including myself, question how the 1996s are aging. The wines are generally characterized by a distinctive rather lemony acidity and very good attack, but some wines now seem terribly austere, while others already seem dangerously short of fruit. None of the subsequent vintages are quite as distinctive as 1996, which in the more successful cases should almost certainly be drunk after the 1999s.

Written Notes

A very discreet type, with elegance as its motive force. There were several of us who unsuccessfully sought after magnificence until I understood that it was not that we should be looking for. In this wine Thierry Gasco has dared to create a vague air of the existential boardering on the unborn. Many – to put it crassly – are going to think that this wine is weak and pale, when precisely the lack of coarse clarity is its greatest asset.

Pale yellow colour with lots of quick small bubbles. Intense but undeveloped nose that is mostly just green apples or green apples skins. With air it opens up just a little bit and gives you white flowers and a touch of nuts. Very young nose. Quite light but creamy attack with green apples, white flowers and toasty notes. Long and refreshing with firm acidity and mineral notes on the finish. Gets fuller and more creamy with air and reveals more toasty layers. Very good but very young. 60% Chardonnay but it tastes more like a Blanc de Blancs today. Drink 2016-2032 92p
