The Story

Les Clos Pompadour, is the single largest clos in champagne, some 25 hectares are nestled in within the city walls of Reims with an impressive 2 metre high wall surrounding the entire vineyard. This year trialled the growers with many climatic hazards from excessive rainfalls to frosts, downy mildew, hail, draught and, finally, sunburn. A cool spring saw late-April frost, which cut volumes early on. Mildew was an issue throughout the region (especially in the Côte des Bar), equally diminishing volumes. The winemaker Clement gave me and my VIP group a wonderful privilege where we had the opportunity to look into the crystal ball of the Clos des Pompadours and taste nine different vintages on magnum. Six of them "prerelease" disgorged without dosage one hour in advance. All impressed emphatically and showed that Clos des Pompadours is a world-class wine that is characterized by the austere chalk from the location with pure belemnit chalk and at the same time by the concentration in the fruit from the old vines. The location itself has the potential to produce 15,000 magnums, but every year only 3,000 magnums are made from the very best grapes. This is one of the explanations why the vintage variation is greater than in other famous vineyard wines. Sometimes they are like white burgundy, other times I find notes of Riesling, Chenin Blanc or Gewurztraminer. It will be extremely exciting to taste them again when they come on the market with 8 grams of sugar in the dosage. 2016 is already more open and inviting than 2014 and is extremely elegant with a nice citrus note of lime zest and lemon together with tight mineral-packed acidity and the usual yellow fruit of Mirabelle plum and apricot.
