The Story

Cuvée Alexandra Rosé. The first vintage of this wine, 1982, was launched for daughter Alexandra’s wedding in 1987. Fortunately, a few bottles still remain for the rest of the world as well. Cuvée Alexandra Rosé is vintage champagne that is made only in the best years.

Cuvée Alexandra Rosé is a rare rosé champagne because a method called saignee is used in its making. This delicate method means that the grapes are left to be extracted with their skins until the desired colour has been achieved.

All Bernard de Nonancourt’s creations rang with the mantra: 'Abiding independence of spirit'. Following the fashion, climbing aboard a trend, were anathema to him. His single-minded dedication saw its finest expression in Alexandra Rosé Millésimé as a glance back at its origins shows…

Already, in 1968, the original Cuvée Rosé had broken new ground. Today the yardstick by which all others are judged, its delectable aromas and hints of soft fruit – raspberry, strawberry, redcurrant – instantly bewitch. These all derive from the soak-on-the-skins maceration process applied to Pinot Noir grapes. Laurent-Perrier derived this knowledge from the skills it acquired making still Coteaux Champenois wines, for which extensive knowledge of Pinot Noir vinification is crucial.

During this phase of the winemaking process, the pigments in the grape skins, known as anthocyanins, colour the grape juice. It is these anthocyanins that give Cuvée Rosé its distinctive raspberry colouring with hints of salmon-pink. More importantly, though, maceration teases out the characteristic soft berry-fruit aromas. The art of cellar master Michel Fauconnet, his know-how and his highly individual style are decisive, because on his sensitive handling of each of these three techniques – maceration, vinification and blending – will dictate the wine’s colour, its unique soft fruit aromas, and the freshness and liveliness that comprise the signature features of the Cuvée Rosé Laurent-Perrier style.

Wine Information

Laurent-Perrier's premium Vintage Cuvée Rosé is like no other champagne and is the outcome of a deliberately innovative approach to winemaking.

Alexandra Rosé is the ultimate expression of the passion, the exacting standards and the sheer excellence of the House. Produced in very small quantities, this outstanding, subtly powerful wine is rare and much sought-after.

Creation of a Great Wine
Laurent-Perrier's Alexandra Rosé occupies a unique position in the House range of champagnes. Filial love as well as an unbridled passion for winemaking presided at its creation.

Bernard de Nonancourt unveiled his Grande Cuvée Rosé Millésimé 1982s, named after his daughter Alexandra, at the time of her wedding in 1987.

This premium cuvée magnificently illustrates the spirit of Laurent-Perrier, its excellence, and the transmission of a body of knowledge and skills that have remained intact, with total respect for the family values.

Vintage 2004

A great example of how large yields do not necessarily mean poor quality in Champagne. As a reaction to the previous year's low yields, the vines produced one of the largest crops on record. The growing season proceeded without major difficulties but the bumper crop called for bud thinning. August brought about cooler weather and some rains, increasing the risk of rot. The massive crop, averaging 13,990 kg/ha, was picked from September 18th onwards. The quality was a pleasant surprise; vibrant wines with appropriate intensity, refined charm and refreshing lightness. This vintage impresses me more and more, and I feel tempted to give it the full five stars. It comes with a rare balance of freshness, lightness, yet fine aromatic intensity. Post-release, this vintage has proven to be slow to age, and elegant wines are likely to keep on ageing gracefully. Dom Pérignon and Louis Roederer Cristal both excelled.

This vintage 2004 Alexandra Rosé Laurent-Perrier is generous and opulent. Full of greed at the sight of his fine and persistent bubbles, it illuminates the glass with his pink amber robe. The nose is fruity, dominated by candied and deep flavors. The palate is very mineral, the wine is tight and delivers many flavors. It is spicy, fruity and delivers beautiful floral notes. In a unique and intense structure, its finish is delicate and unforgettable.

Inside Information

MEDIA RATINGS:

96p VINOUS: Tasted from magnum, the 2004 Grande Cuvée Rosé Alexandra, Laurent-Perrier’s flagship Rosé is a blend of 80% Pinot Noir (on the skins) and 20% Chardonnay vinified together that has only been bottled seven times since 1982. From the very first taste, the 2004 is utterly spectacular. Rich, ample and vertical in feel, the 2004 is dazzling. Dried rose petal, star anise, tobacco, dried flowers, red berry fruit and earthy notes all grace this utterly exquisite Champagne. As good as the 2004 is today – and it is fabulous – it will be even better in another few years’ time. The 2004 has been nothing short of magnificent on both occasions I have tasted it so far. (Antonio Galloni) (7/2019)

95p James Suckling: Aromas of peaches and light cherries with rust and hints of grapefruit. Earth and spice undertone. Full-bodied, fruity and spicy. Hints of black pepper. Extremely bright and creamy texture. Delicious and delicate finish. (9/2019)

95p Wine Enthusiast: First produced in the 1987 vintage to celebrate the marriage of owner Bernard de Nonancourt’s eldest daughter, this bottling is now mature. Ripe, it still retains plenty of red fruits while also allowing the toasty character to show through. It’s a rosé that calls for food, a rich and balanced wine that is just perfect to drink now. (RV) (12/2014)

94p Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: Based on synced-fermented 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay from company-owned grand cru vineyards, the salmon-pink colored 2004 Alexandra Grande Cuvée Rosé displays a very subtle and fresh bouquet of great elegance and purity. Intense and complex on the palate, this is a very dry, fresh and tension-filled Rosé full of energy and delicacy. Very elegant and still a bit limey, but a great Champagne. (SR) (6/2016)

94p Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: Light, bright orange-pink. High-pitched red berry, orange zest and floral scents are underscored by an intense mineral nuance. Taut, linear and strikingly pure, offering deeply concentrated redcurrant and strawberry scents and hints of allspice, smoky lees and jasmine. Powerful yet lithe rose with superb finishing power, focus and mineral-driven persistence. (JR) (12/2013)

93p Wine & Spirits: A luscious Champagne, this bristles with tight red raspberry and fresh floral notes. The flavors last with finesse, a sophisticated integration achieved through macerating Pinot Noir (80 percent) and Chardonnay together, allowing the skins of the Pinot Noir to bleed their color into the juice. Chef de cave Michel Fauconnet produces this wine only in top vintages, when the varieties ripen at the same time. (12/2016)

93p Wine Spectator: Aromatic notes of smoke and mineral herald this rich rosé Champagne, leading to a finely meshed mix of dried white cherry, toasted almond, spring forest and orange peel, carried on a soft, pearled bead. Fresh, with lightly mouthwatering acidity firming the fruitcake-laced finish. Drink now through 2029. (AN, Web Only-2016)
