94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

This has turned out to be even slightly better than my already positive initial review (see herein) with its now lightly oaky nose of warm earth¡ cassis and notably ripe and highly complex crushed berry aromas. The impressive depth of the nose continues onto the highly refined¡ silky and solidly well-concentrated medium-bodied flavors that are gorgeously rich and generous yet notably refined¡ all wrapped in a hugely long finish. This is a classic Charmes that is built more along the lines of finesse and understatement than robust power. Moreover¡ while clearly still on the way up¡ with air it can easily be enjoyed now. In a word¡ terrific. Tasted several times recently with consistent notes. (Drink starting 2017)  (4/2012)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Drouhin’s 2005 Charmes Chambertin (from the 'true' Charmes, and from purchased grapes) offers site-typical vividness of cherry fruit, with subtle notes of licorice, vanilla, flowers and brown spices in a lovely bouquet. Sleek and refined in texture and strikingly pure in fruit on the palate, it seems a bit demure (though bright and mouth-watering) in its finish, possibly on account of its recent bottling. (DS)  (6/2007)

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Medium red. Floral, high-pitched aromas of strawberry, red cherry, rose petal and minerals. Dense and rich but a tad chunky, even youthfully severe, for a Drouhin wine, with distinct suggestions of superripe fruit. There's some floral lift to the red fruit flavors as well as a chocolatey quality on the finish, which features dusty tannins.  (4/2008)

The Story

History & tradition: were there "charmes" (beech trees) growing here at one time? Or were people just referring to the characteristics of the wine? A 19th Century official document does mention the "untilled land of charmes"...

Soil: outcroppings of limestone with thin topsoil; rocky soil with some marl.

Viticulture
Plantation density: 10,000 vinestocks/ha in order to extract as much as possible from the terroir and limit the production of each vine stock.
Pruning: Guyot.
Yield: 38 hl/ha - purposely low, in order for the grapes to reveal every nuance of the terroir.
Grape Supply: grapes and wines provided by regular supply partners.

Vinification
Maceration:
maceration and vinification take 2 to 3 weeks
indigenous yeasts
maceration and fermentation temperatures under total control.
Joseph Drouhin seeks total control of the process of extraction; extraction gives colour and substance but should never be detrimental to the finesse and typical character of the wine.

Ageing
Type: in barrels (20% in new oak).
Length: 14 to 18 months.
Origin of the wood: French oak forests.
Weathering of the wood: Joseph Drouhin insists on total control of the weathering for a period of 3 years, one of the contributing elements to the elegance of the wine.

Throughout the ageing process, decisions are taken only after careful tasting evaluation, barrel by barrel. The data obtained is then completed through technical analysis. As with every other Joseph Drouhin wine, absolute priority is given to the true expression of terroir and character of the vintage.

Tasting note by Véronique Boss-Drouhin
"A generous and distinctive wine, often superb. The colour is intense and bright. On the nose, the first impression that arises is that of cherry. Then, woody and fine spicy aromas appear, with an elegant hint of musk in some vintages. The flavours are extraordinary in their richness and harmony, neither too rough nor too heavy. The architecture of the wine is held up by fine and noble tannins, giving the body a silky texture (called "gras"). Acidity brings energy and liveliness to the whole. The aftertaste is a pure delight".

Temperature: 16°C (61-62°F).
Cellaring: 5 to 20 years.

Wine Information

Pure delight in all the appellations.  The colour is ruby red, very intense but less so than in 2003.  The aromas, well marked when the wines were young, are more reserved now, on classic notes of little red berries.
Both Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits have a consistent structure, based on good balance between acidity, alcohol and tannin.  It is this balance that gives the wines such elegance.  The tannins are ripe and refined.  They harmonize nicely with a refreshing acidity devoid of astringency and a normal level of alcohol.
The exquisite fruit found in the range of lesser villages in Burgundy, such as Chorey-les-Beaune, will charm wine lovers everywhere.  The Premier and Grand Crus have been somewhat closed these last few months.  Their structure tends to dominate the bouquet and aromas.  It would be unfortunate to drink these wines now.  The ageing potential of the Grand Crus is certainly several decades, although it will be possible to enjoy them earlier.

In summary, 2005 has a lot in common with some great vintages of the past: the beautiful richness of 1990, the harmonious character of 1989 and the haunting bouquet of 1961.

Vuosikerta 2005

2005 VINTAGE in Burgundy / Hopes made way for certainty.

2005 promises to produce outstanding whites, with elegance and opulence beyond the norm, and superb, seductive and well-structured red wines.

The richness of these wines perfectly expresses the diversity of the region. A wine of excellent quality is achieved above all through the ripeness and healthiness of the grapes. For this reason, thanks to the almost ideal climatic conditions, 2005 will an exceptional year. At the point of harvest, the chardonnay and pinot noir grapes (the two principal grape varieties in Burgundy) were magnificent and luscious. The chardonnay produced resplendent golden grapes, bursting with sugar and the pinot noir produced densely packed grapes of an intense colour, characteristic of all great vintages. Due to low rainfall and weak northerly winds, the grapes remained in a remarkable state and did not require any sorting.

Under a radiant sun, the harvest passed by peacefully, giving the wine-growers the opportunity to assess the optimal maturity in relation to the grape varieties and parcels. The sugar content in the grapes reached above satisfactory levels, in some cases close to outstanding, which is a good indication of maturity, and promises a good balance between the acidity and sugar levels found in the wines

The red grapes' thick skin stored up large quantities of polyphenol (colour and tannin), a demonstration of their healthiness. Vinification took place in ideal circumstances.

Mid-november

The white wines, although still fermenting, already reveal an extraordinary richness and aromatic complexity with great finesse (notes of pear and peach with a hint of ripe grapefruits). On the palate, the wines are incredibly ample. The chewiness and acidity are in perfect harmony and enhance the elegance and freshness of the chardonnay.

The red wines possess deep and intense garnet-coloured robes. They exude intense aromas of fruit (blueberry, blackcurrants, cherries, wild strawberries) and variety of spices (pepper). On the palate, the fruit blends with the rounded elegance of the tannins and the light acidity, which all come together to ensure the length of the wine. The powerful and elegant structure of these wines is a sign of their good ageing potential. For the domaines, cooperatives and maisons of Burgundy, 2005 is without a doubt a vintage of exceptional quality which promises wonderful surprises for the consumer.
