A Rare Vertical of Taittinger Comtes de Champagne
by tastingbook.com
Few Champagnes possess the prestige and longevity of Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, one of the world’s most celebrated Blanc de Blancs. Produced only in exceptional vintages and sourced from Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyards of the Côte des Blancs, the wine is renowned for its elegance, precision and extraordinary ageing potential.
A recent tasting explored an impressive selection of Comtes de Champagne vintages spanning more than five decades, offering a fascinating perspective on how the cuvée evolves over time.
The oldest wines revealed the remarkable longevity of great Blanc de Blancs Champagne. Bottles such as 1959 and 1961showed deep complexity, with layers of honeyed citrus, brioche, roasted almond and dried fruit, while still retaining a surprising freshness on the palate. Vintages from the late 1960s and early 1970s displayed beautifully mature character, combining nutty richness with elegant structure.
Among the later wines, 1988 stood out as one of the most classic and precise expressions of Comtes, reflecting the cool, structured nature of the vintage. The 2004 and 2008 vintages impressed with their purity, tension and remarkable mineral precision, confirming their reputation as outstanding modern releases.
The tasting also included several vintages of Comtes de Champagne Rosé, adding another dimension to the experience. Mature examples such as 1971 and 1975 showed delicate notes of dried strawberry, orange peel and brioche, while the exceptional 1996 Rosé demonstrated remarkable vibrancy and structure.
Across all vintages, the defining qualities of Comtes de Champagne remained clear: finesse, chalky minerality and an extraordinary ability to age. The tasting confirmed that this iconic cuvée continues to stand among the greatest expressions of Chardonnay in the world of Champagne.
