The Story

The call of faraway lands. As mysterious and intriguing as a lone adventurer returning from a solitary sail, Cos d’Estournel is slow to reveal itself. Little by little, it evokes stories of distant places, market stalls brimming with unfamiliar fruits, spices and wares, village festivities warmed by the joy of revelers and the setting sun, and sumptuous visions of ladies and their voluptuous curves. A myriad of scents, colors and tastes appeal...

Vintage 2010

Drought and cool temperatures contribute to optimal ripeness

The sum of summer temperatures in 2010 was close to that of summer 2009 (962°C compared to 982°C), but significantly colder than those of 2005, which totaled 1052°C. These cool temperatures had a substantial influence on the balance of our wines, preserving a good level of acidity and an attractive aromatic freshness.

Very little precipitation (only 267 mm) from March to August...

Written Notes

Black!, extracted and massive, the acidity is just able to manage it, huge body, alcoholic finish, vulgar as few, easy to like probably, no refinement what so ever, hopefully there is something in there that will show in the future. For now 92-94

Tasted in May 2013. Black fruit en masse but also alcohol (cherry vodka) very, very evident on the nose and palate, extremely powerful wine on the palate with really fat fruit and tannin. Fruit is on border of overextraction and this wine is extremely massive and imho not at all typical Bordeaux. Close to Napa Valley style. Either you like it or you hate it. I've to be neutral here and I can't abstract from the fact that this is high quality wine.

Vibrant blackberries, cherries, plum, spices, hint of cedar oak. The amazingly fresh 2010 Cos d'Estournel has a deep, opaque purple hue, with aromatics of vibrant blackberries, cherries, plum, spices and a hint of cedar. There is nice depth of fruit and restrained characters to the flavours. It is good to see Cos moving away from over-extraction and crafting a wine that is detailed enough to express its fine terroir. This is a more classic style of Cos, understated and subtle but also with wonderful freshness and length.
