The Story

Chambertin – Domaine Armand Rousseau

Chambertin gained a reputation from the patronage of Napoleon I, who is rumoured not to have drunk anything else and watered down his Chambertin with plenty of water. He favoured it at five to six years old and never drank more than half a bottle with a meal. When the ex-Emperor was exiled on St. Helena, he was forced to drink claret, since that was easier to ship to the isolated island.

Vintage 2003: A surprising vintage…to follow closely !

After a cold and snowy winter, the sun started to appear at the beginning of March and never left ! The months of February and March were very dry with no rain at all (40 to 50% less than normal). There was some spring frost at the beginning of April, but the Côte de Nuits did not suffer from it compared to the vineyards situated in the south of Burgundy. Then, weeks followed weeks in a...

Written Notes

Domaine Armand Rousseau is part of the gold standard for Burgundy lovers, especially in Hong Kong. Yesterday I tasted reds from his two top vineyards from the extremely hot vintage of 2003. I wasn't expecting to find truly great wines, but Rousseau's Chambertin was just that. It showed crazy aromas of shitake mushrooms and dried cherries and strawberries. It was full body with velvety tannins and a long and intense finish. Lots of fruit but not too much. It was so integrated and beautiful for the vintage. Drink or hold.

Medium to medium-full, vigorous colour. Splendid rich nose. Fat, but not a bit midi-ish. Medium-full body. Full, soft, sweet, ripe and stylish. Really quite clssy and quite long on the plate. Very seductive. Ready.

Bright, pale ruby in color. Gorgeous nose that is instantly appealing, loads of ripe red fruits, rosehip, herbs, exotic flowers and blackberry, all beautifully layered. Very rich and opulent but framed by clear structure and freshness. Rose petals, forest floor, spicy oak and an abundance of red berries. Great length and precision.
