98 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

This is also ultra-pure and densely fruited with notes of anise, mint, wet stone and a sauvage hint that introduces intensely earthy and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that are rich, powerful, serious and densely concentrated, all wrapped in a silky, palate staining, explosive and colossally persistent finish. This is actually relatively expressive and approachable for a young Cham yet the balance and ...

The Story

Chambertin – Domaine Armand Rousseau

Chambertin gained a reputation from the patronage of Napoleon I, who is rumoured not to have drunk anything else and watered down his Chambertin with plenty of water. He favoured it at five to six years old and never drank more than half a bottle with a meal. When the ex-Emperor was exiled on St. Helena, he was forced to drink claret, since that was easier to ship to the isolated island.

Wine Information

The climatic specificity of 2009 was illustrated by a generous sunshine and a few rainstorms. In addition, two episodes of hail (April and may) hit the major part of the Clos de la Roche as well as the Mazoyères-Chambertin (assembled and vinified with the Charmes Chambertin). The mini and maxi temperatures were almost always above normal ever since the beginning of April until the end of August.

The vine starts its development towards the e...

Vintage 2009

A warm spring with some hail in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits. After an even flowering and a warm June, the summer arrived with variable July weather. Fortunately August was fine with a period of hot weather in the second week. September started with some rain, then became fine and warm again. A harvest of healthy, ripe grapes followed. The 2009s have all the structure packed in with rich, luscious fruit. Comparable to the 2005s. Grea...

Written Notes

The 2009 Chambertin is breathtaking in its beauty. It boasts gorgeous textural depth and richness in its eternal, endless layers of fruit. This is a totally seamless wine that captures the style of the year and the personality of the vineyard. A sweet note of cassis lingers on the finessed finish. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.

Now they have 2.55 ha thanks to a 0.4 ha parcel bought in July 2009 from Dom Belland of Santenay. They resold the rest immediately to St-Girard. Very fragrant rather than majestic. Solid and substantial and a definite step up from Clos de Bèze this year. Some solidity and on the finish there starts to be some exciting interplay between fruits and flowers – not what one normally expects of Chambertin! Good undertow. But in light register.

This is very lovely indeed. Lots of depth and energy. Excellent fruit. A really profound, vigorous and classy wine. Beautiful!

Bright ruby red in color. Intense and solid nose with a wealth of layered aromas of lush red fruits, cranberry, rose petals and a soft but distinct spicyness. Powerful but balanced on the palate, showing great but dormant complexity with an array of red blossom, dried rose petals, cranberry, pomegranate and a smooth spicy finish.
