The Story

This is the Domaine's only plot that is not located in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. Located on the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, it is a hard calcareoussoil, with a depth of barely 30 cm of soil and big stones which gives it its name. Clos de la Roche has the power and the richness of Morey-Saint Denis. Very expressive wine. Beautiful and elegant complexity.

Of all the villages of the Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis is one of the...

Wine Information

The climatic specificity of 2009 was illustrated by a generous sunshine and a few rainstorms. In addition, two episodes of hail (April and may) hit the major part of the Clos de la Roche as well as the Mazoyères-Chambertin (assembled and vinified with the Charmes Chambertin). The mini and maxi temperatures were almost always above normal ever since the beginning of April until the end of August.

Vintage 2009

A warm spring with some hail in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits. After an even flowering and a warm June, the summer arrived with variable July weather. Fortunately August was fine with a period of hot weather in the second week. September started with some rain, then became fine and warm again. A harvest of healthy, ripe grapes followed. The 2009s have all the structure packed in with rich, luscious fruit. Comparable to the 2005s. Grea...

Written Notes

This is riper still with a complex mélange of red and blue pinot fruit, violets, lavender, earth and a hint of spice that precedes the rich, supple and powerful flavors that are underpinned by sophisticated tannins and a balanced, minerally and gorgeously long finish. This is strikingly complex and by far and away the best showing of this wine that I have ever seen, at least at such an early juncture.

Good colour. Soft, but vigorous nose. Lots of ample fruit. Fullish body. Very good grip. Rather more bite and personality than this wine has had in the past. Indeed very delicious. Lovely plump, balanced fruit. Long on the palate and plenty of class.

  • 93p
Bright ruby red in color. Powerful nose of ripe red fruits in the core with out-lying notes of plum, spices and vegetal aromas. Dense and structured on the palate, silky but firm tannins, surrounded by cranberry, pomegranate and roasted spices.
