The Story

The wine-growing village of Flagey-Échezeaux lies in the " Plain ", so-called, between Vougeot and Vosne-Romanée in the Côte de Nuits. Facing east, the Grands-Échezeaux vines are a prolongation of Musigny following the North-South axis of the Côte, but more regular and less broken in their layout. At the bottom end, the " Climat " known as La Combe d'Orveau separates them from Musigny. The Échezeaux vineyards, for their part, divide the Clos d...

Wine Information

"We tend to count too much on science, when, before, people gave importance to natural things. One thing is certain, the ancients were not dumb, and if they established a tradition it was because of their experience. They tried to eliminate unfavorable elements and preserve what worked best." -Henri Jayer

Vintage 1996

1996 VINTAGE in Burgundy

Maturity levels were in general high following a long hot summer. The wines from the famous Pinot Noir have an intense ruby red colour with lush red fruit aromas. They are wines that are comparable with the outstanding 88s and 89s. The whites are just as outstanding full-bodied with elegant vibrant Chardonnay fruit and sweet white flower and grilled nut aromas. These are wines that have the potential to age magnific...

Written Notes

BJ came through with a backup, always packing extra ammunition just in case, a lesson that he credited to Bad Boy, or perhaps Bad Boy credited himself, as he just showed up with the Queen about halfway through since they were around the corner.  The 1996 Henri for Georges Jayer Echezeaux was a bit roasted in a good way.  It was cream city with a bit of stewed fruit, so slightly and not really.  There were hay and dandelion flavors making for a nice wine, but this was surprisingly lighter than the others.  There was a kiss of blue fruit and ice cream to its palate.  As we kept drinking it, I felt like it declined and my score went with it (94).

A powerful Echezeaux that defies the typical perception of Echezeaux being at towards the bottom of the grand cru rung. This wine is eripe, quite generous and intense without any heaviness. Flavors range from dark cherries to savory herbs, green tea leaves and nutmeg. Long finish. At its ideal peak.

Pale ruby, thin brick rim. So clean, so pure, touch of white chocolate, fresh vanilla, wild strawberries, pure essence, such eleganse, focus and perfection, roses, violets, jasmin, caprifolium, like a nordic garden in a fresh summer night. Lean and tender body, but what intense flavours, great acidity, youthfull feel still. Extremelly elegant again, complex, transparent and tender at the same time, absolutely fantastic length. 98
