The Story

Taittinger Comtes de Champagne is the finest expression of the world famous wine from one of the greatest Champagne Houses. First produced in 1952, Comtes is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes from 5 Grand Cru sites in the Côte des Blancs. Showing a pristine pale yellow colour with very light, abundant bubbles which rise uniformly to form a fine mousse. The evocative bouquet opens with notes of pears and fresh cute white flowers. Left in the gla...

Vintage 1989

Champagne: A warm vintage, where simply charming wines were produced. However, there was not enough heat throughout the year. Spring frosts killed some of the shoots, reducing the harvest by 20%. The inflorescences were discontinued due to the exceptionally cold weather. This was followed by the maturation of the grapes in two phases. Written Notes

asted blind at the Helsinki tasting of the great champagnes from the 1980s, where it was mistaken for a few of the greats, which carry far larger price tags. Offered freshly baked bread and citrus notes. Complexity, structure, intensity. The nose incredibly seductive. Amazing balance and still life ahead. Wonderful length. This is one of the very best 1989s I've seen. 98.

The Cardinal indoctrinated us with a 1989 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, a vintage I don’t see often for this wine. Its nose was big and butterscotchy with hearty acid. This was still on the way up, and its tasty yellow fruits were yummy, but its palate was lighter than the nose led me to believe. There was a bit of seltzer to this excellent C de C (93).

Light green colour. Intense, delicious, smoky tones. Dry, firm, vivid acidity, concentrated, long lingering finish with loads of green apples. Endless! – JL – Aug 25, 2018
